Excited to share my latest piece "  Sunrise by the Sea" (天光漸亮的海邊), a heartfelt miniature for cello and piano, dedicated to my dear friend Cellist Jeremy Chun-Chieh Yen who showcased this piece (two miniatures)  in his recital on Feb.25, 2024. This piece emanates lyricism, with a touch of melancholy, intertwining a canvas of emotions and nostalgic moments.

《追光与乐》天光渐亮的海边  Sunrise by the Sea

In this second movement, I blend two popular melodies of the Chinese folk song" Jasmine Flower" with Taiwanese folk tune" Dark Sky"(天黑黑）. What sets it apart is the incorporation of modern string techniques, plenty of harmonics , pizz and slide pizz. slap etc. and the cello often goes to very high register.

Single from Carmen Braden's 2024 album "A Hard Light" - the song "Voice in the Dark" has a story behind it: 

"One day there was a major system failure where my friend worked as a radio host. They knew no-one could hear them, but they had to keep talking in case the signal managed to get back on-air. The song is about holding onto thin threads of hope, about connection between people over big spaces and through dark times. It’s also an homage to radio and the power it still has to connect - something that’s still a strong part of culture + community in Canada’s north."

This composition is written for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano. It has two short contrasting movements titled "Shadows" and "Eternal Light" inspired by the life story of Greta Thunberg, the young Swedish environmental activist who gained international recognition through her campaign on climate change. This work is a poetic imagination of Greta’s inner psyche as a painter who sees the world, almost autobiographical, rises from depression and suffering of nature’s destruction, to the casting of light and humanity that bath the universe with hope.

I Imagined She Who Paints The World

The text was written in November 2022 by Dr. Jeanette Gallant. The poetry features the extraordinary power of nature and the resilience of the human spirit.
Using the vivid imagery of the poem, I’ve tried to weave themes of struggle and hope, inviting the listener to contemplate the timeless dance between darkness and light. The opening melody provides continuity throughout.

Silence to Silence, in tribute to R. Murray Schafer, music by Carol Ann Weaver, with text by Rae Crossman, was world-premiered by Inshallah Choir, Debbie Lou Ludolph, conductor, Nov. 26,2024 in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.  The piece was composed in Algonquin in 2021, shortly after the death of R. Murray Schafer, beloved Canadian composer/soundscape originator/author/environmentalist, who died earlier in 2021.  The work evokes a day in the (Algonquin) wilderness, with loons, water, and rarely heard wolves.  All natural recordings are by CAWeaver from Algonquin. In the spring Lemon Creek comes down the mountain with fierce, roaring white-water energy. But in July, when this was recorded, it meanders leisurely through pebbles and rocks, whirling and burbling, trickling and whispering. Take a moment and listen. Slow down. Breathe. There is magic in listening.

I wrote this piece for Delilah Saunders after her sister, Loretta was murdered in K'jipuktuk/Halifax, Mi'kma'ki/Nova Scotia.
This piece is for all the families and friends of murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls.
It's about searching and moving through grief. 
Since writing and posting this piece, Delilah herself has passed and I am moving through my own/collective grief.
I share this piece in D's honour and love.
