Jungle

Another Sunday afternoon digging through the vaults. This one is a selection of Equinox records from mostly around 2004-2006.

Scientific Wax was just about resurrected by this point, but Equinox had not yet released a single track on his own label (and wouldn't until 2011). He instead spread himself about on now essential imprints Bassbin (and offshoot Breakin'), Inperspective and Subtle Audio.

So there is not a single Sci-Wax tune to be found here.

This one goes from light and breaky, to dubbed out and rolling, before moving into the punishing amen sound the man is renowned for.

Randall- Metalheadz Re-Mastered History Mix

A fabric Blog feature on the Bristolian drum & bass behemoth that is DJ Die has been a long time coming. A true individual who stands tall in the leagues of electronic music with twenty years in the game, this Friday's show (21st August) won't be the first time the legendary Full Cycle associated producer has graced our Farringdon haunt, not by a long shot. But for some reason it's taken us this long to get him to finally contribute a mix to our ongoing series.

"It's a jungle one," Die explained when his mix landed in our inbox yesterday morning; "going back to some of the first music I've ever heard that I'd say was jungle or jungle techno". Clearly, the task of actually deciding how you want to sonically outline your sound by way of 60-minute mix can be a little tricky when your career spans a hefty two decades (and then some). But especially so when the kind of musical journey you've taken has itself experienced a number of different cycles and shifts. The simple fact of the matter is, right now, DJ Die is in a different place than before…

"I guess I would like to state that this a personal history mix and does not fully represent where I'm at now as a DJ and artist,” the genre spanning Gutterfunk label boss offers by way of an explanation. “It is however a huge part of the journey of how I got here.”

DJ Die - Square 1 To 10: Jungle Elements Mix

Today, the online music portal of Mixmag magazine published an article commemorating some of the women who have shaped and contributed to the progression of electronic music. Taking into account the state of the underground and contemporary clubbing landscape we know today, amongst the various vanguards like Donna Summer and Heather Heart were Metalheadz co-founder and the second to none selector, DJ Storm. Renowned for her a pivotal part in the formation of a subculture fuelled by warehouse raves and momentous soundsystems and her close connoisseurs and fellow Metalheadz operators, Goldie and the late DJ Kemistry, the superbly progressive strain of drum & bass and the unadulterated territories that came with that time were critical in the ever evolving electronic movement. Even now, her role in the scene today is as imperative as ever, representing a label and a sound that’s still flourishing some 25 years later. 

A week on Friday Storm will once again link with her Metalheadz crew as the label takes hold of our Room One to toast the launch of label signee Mikal's debut album. To give us a snippet of what's in store the DJ aptly dubbed ‘the first lady of drum & bass’ has graciously taken the time to pull together another of her excercises in first class selections in this brand new and exclusive promo mix.

DJ Storm - FABRICLIVE x Metalheadz Mix

As an original part of the Metalheadz crew (his name is inked on the spine of the label's first ever release), Doc Scott's been a constant influence and driving force behind 170bpm music whether working on Reinforced, HDZ, Bukem's Goodlooking imprint or on his own 31 Records. Over time since he first appeared the Coventry born producer's watched the scene he loves weather changes, or as his biography puts it "from it's transitions from rave to hardcore, jungle-techno to tech step to d&b, from UK based to a global scene and industry, Doc Scott has seen it all and been there for the entire journey." He's quite famously described by his long time friend Goldie as "king of the rollers" and he's the type of DJ that when he speaks, you simply put up and listen. 

And that's what we've been doing all day, since we received this exclusive mix, one he's delivered ahead of his Room Two appearance alongside LTJ Bukem, Klute and Dom & Roland a week on Friday. Sometimes gumpf just gets in the way so all we'll say, is sit back, get comfortable and press play...
