So only a few more days left to this year, but, more importantly, a few more days before I announce my Best of 2021 lists, but before we wave another year farewell, I've got something very special to share with you. In fact, this is a celebration of two years, to be more precise - two years of releases from the amazing LAAPS imprint. The label was created by Mathias Van Eecloo as a permanent sonic and visual continuity, with each release starting with the end of the previous one. And now, two years, four seasons, and 16 releases later, we've got this gorgeous 60-minute mix showcasing each one... turning into what I may bluntly proclaim to be an exclusive compilation just for Headphone Commute! And this is just the beginning! A little birdie told me that the series will extend to exactly 100 releases, running for 12 years straight! But enough words, let's turn towards all this gorgeous music!

In his latest book, he shows how artists and missionaries participated in "cultures of astrobiology," or the study of life on other planets. Exploring the ways that a variety of authors, artists, and governments have imagined a future with and for Muslims, Matthias shows that there are many overlapping and competing visions of Muslim Futurism.

Jörg Matthias Determann is an associate professor of history at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar. He also serves as an associate editor of the Review of Middle East Studies.

Shireen Hamza is a doctoral candidate in the History of Science department at Harvard University. Her research focuses on the history of medical exchange in the medieval Indian Ocean world.

Islam and Science Fiction | Jörg Matthias Determann

E527 | How did the Ottomans secure widespread buy-in for modernization projects across the empire's many geographies and communities? This episode explores that question through the experiences of Armenians in the Ottoman East. Our guest, Richard Antaramian, shares some of his research, which argues that Ottoman shared governance worked through networks of power that linked center to periphery and sustained relationships among notables of different confessions, classes, and locations. The Ottoman tax-farming system of the 18th century forged ties among central authorities, provincial notables, and Armenian financiers. As the Ottoman government embarked upon the modernizing reform projects of the late 1700s and 1800s, those forms of shared governence frayed. In the Ottoman East, the Armenian Patriarchate's attempts to enact new notions of reform saw major successes, with the establishment limited representative governance, a constitution, and new educational institutions. Yet, those successes came at the cost of weakening the ties between provincial Armenians and important power brokers like provincial notables and Kurdish tribal leaders. Ultimately, the Armenian Patriarchate's successes at reform translated into trouble for its newly-isolated flock in the empire's eastern borderlands.

Richard Antaramian is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Southern California. His research interests include, among others, the history of non-Muslims in the Ottoman Empire.

Matthew Ghazarian is a Manoogian Research Fellow in the Center for Armenian Studies and the Department of History at the University of Michigan. His research examines the intersection of social, economic, and environmental history in the late Ottoman Empire.

Georgian Music Journalist & Selectors Collective, „Dancing On Architecture“ Presents 20-hour long music marathon and solidarity campaign “Sounds Of Ukraine” at Mutant Radio’s physical & online spaces. During these days we will play & present various music genres, different decades & city sounds from all over Ukraine.

Along with Musical part, there will be Fundraising Exhibition by Georgian Artists at Mutant Radio’s physical space. All the proceeds from this will be donated to the Crisis Relief Fund for Ukrainian Children.
