Work on Lossless Life Files started roughly 3 years ago when I was going through somewhat of a ‘transformation’. Like all good transformation stories, it wasn’t all roses. After the end of a long-term relationship, I entered a somewhat self-destructive period. Somehow, after hammering on that nail for a relatively short period, I met someone (enter pandemic romance). Without a doubt, they helped guide me into the person I now am and as a result helped steer the ship of this album. Over the next 2.5 years I kept adding bits and pieces to this thing. I wanted to make something that spanned a bunch of styles and genres and didn’t play the ugly music PR game too much. In my opinion at least, I’ve included some examples of the following: Downtempo, Ambient, House, Emo, Hauntology, Breaks, Jungle, Hip-Hop, Abstract, Musique concrète, Poetry...blah, blah givemyselfabigpatontheback. Now at the end of it all, I’m at the start of another life transformation. Things are up in the air so to speak. But this time its a lot more checking in with self than checking out of self. Whilst I know I will never really have much of an audience due to the way I work this godforsaken thing, I do know or more, I promise if you do listen, it’ll always be personally from me and I’ll likely always open up more than I should, so you can feel what the fuck it is I’m feeling when making this shit.

Work on Trust, Loss, Forever started in 2019. That’s pre-pandemic world.. It started as a means of catharsis for me (pete.mcm) after the death of my maternal Granda (that’s Granddad/Grandfather to the rest of ye). Following his death I inherited tapes that he would use to record local radio (and even some early performances of myself playing drums). Having at the time recently purchased a second-hand 4-track, the pieces seemingly fell into place to try and do something.

I knew I desperately wanted to return to my band-days (nostalgia overlord) as I’d grown particularly weary of staring into the computer screen and so I didn’t think much if anything at all about who would hear this or what I wanted to achieve. As usual, if I was to achieve anything it would be that I’d want to listen to it on repeat and build upon it. In terms of style, I guess I didn’t have much vision other than I kinda wanted to play emo riffs in a more simplistic way, in a tone that maybe would be associated more with ‘dreamy' music.... Dreamo if you will, hello folks. The first song I wrote was Trust43vr and after that, it was kind of off to the races. The rest of the instrumentals kept coming and I would just commit them all to tape and not be at all precious about overbearing tape hiss, hums and overtones. Fuck it, just get this demon out of me.

After a while of sitting on the instrumental tracks, I started to think that turning these into ‘actual’ songs with some singing on top would really be the ticket. Unfortunately, I’ve never been all that talented at singing and I didn’t feel my voice was suited to the music anyway. I had a think, and my old pal John (Eyes of Others) popped into my head, and I thought why not hit him up. To my surprise he was down to have a go and after a few weeks I was delighted to receive some tracks back with his vocals atop.

What I hadn’t banked on is that the pain channeled into my instrumentals would resonate with John. Newly sober, he was able to find solace in the music which acted as a pressure valve, allowing the lyrics to flow. I was genuinely taken aback when hearing songs like Sweet Song for the first time, as with the new melodies and lyrics on top, their context was given whole new meaning. *Side note - we ended up (for the most part) keeping the names of the instrumental tracks rather than renaming them, as I’m sure my Granda would have been happy with track titles like Assblast innit.

Some of you might have caught whispers of the record in 2021/2022 as it was due to be released on Scottish label Pace Yourself. As these things sometimes go, it didn’t work out, and it is unfortunate there was already some press in the works, but here we are. I’m happier than ever to continue putting out stuff myself and without any feeling of pressure to write in any specific way. Compare this record to my latest solo record from a few months ago (Lossless Life Files) and they are fairly far apart, stylistically, but that’s fine. More than ever I believe we do not need to stick to a sound. We’re all complicated people with different feelings and moods and why the fuck should I be acting like I am entirely into one thing. I might even do a heavy project next.

Sensible Seelen Vol. 3 - In Gedenken An, marks the third 10-track compilation from the Berlin-based label, and this time is an all-out ode to the many faces of ambient. The release is particularly sentimental as it is dedicated to Patrick Sheridan, a friend of label co-runner DJ Küsse, who unfortunately, lost their life earlier in the year. With this in mind, all proceeds from the release will go toward Inspire, a mental health charity in Northern Ireland, where both Sheridan and DJ Küsse were born. Throughout the record, themes of isolation and depression rub shoulders with more optimistic and hopeful sounds, which inevitably ring true to many who have dealt with the loss of a loved one. Along with label runners DJ Küsse and Khshathra, the compilation also feature tracks from Eden Burns (Public Possession), Nice Girl (Public Possession), Calmee (1/2 of Hi & Saberhägen), Der Opium Queen (Echovolt Records), RL/VL (aka Space Dimension Controller), Philip Bundy (Let’s Play House) and Yoshi (aka Joshua Sabin).
