Presenting the ever-lovely and ever-inspiring @mikemidnight for #175 in the series. The Boorloo/ Perth based artist initially garnered attention through his output of insanely dreamy trip-hop productions... the perfect combination of emotional & uplifting, and immaculately produced. Mike plays live as a solo artist and now makes up 1/3 of the exciting new band Trickpony, made up of Roza Terenzi, Emkay & Mike himself. 

Beyond his knack for weaving tear-jerkingly beautiful trip hop infused songs - Mike is also a great DJ. Here, with a more club-oriented mix, he showcases his taste & talent, a BTS look into the genres & moods that make up the mind of the talented artist.

𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘅
This mix explores weird and experimental drum patterns. I wanted to create a journey through dark and weird rhythms that challenge the usual beat structures and that typically characterise my DJ sets. The drums are always different, sometimes off the beaten path, creating varied dynamics—moments that are upbeat as well as static, trippy moments—giving the entire set a mysterious and intense atmosphere. In my DJ sets, I like to bring together all the music and genres that have influenced and shaped my musical path over time.

𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰?
I was lucky to grow up in a family where music has always been a priority. I’m grateful to my parents for passing down this passion to me. My first approach to music was through acoustic drums—my father is a drummer and my mother took singing lessons. For me, playing drums was a moment of freedom, a way to vent, but also a love-hate relationship. I remember that at some point, I couldn’t express myself the way I wanted or with the people I wanted. 
Over the years, I got closer to the clubs in my area, and my love for the DJ figure was immediate. For several years, I lived in Puglia, my hometown, where I took my first steps as a DJ. Those were beautiful years, full of learning and hard work and research, all to start playing in clubs and illegal parties eheh

𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲?
Right now, I think the music scene in Milan is one of the most prolific and solid in Europe. There are so many high-level artists, each with their own background and unique sound. Moving here was a turning point for me since the beginning, I’ve felt motivated and inspired by all the artists I’ve connected with. I believe growing in an environment where the scene is this strong and innovative is essential for any artist.
That said, one of the biggest issues in the city right now is the lack of spaces to play, perform, and organize parties. Prices are also insanely high, which makes it really hard to access and self-fund events. What we’re doing is a form of resistance..we have a mission, and we need to keep it alive.

It is not easy to find Saphira, and it is even harder to leave. If it so chooses, the city will appear first as a quivering mirage on the horizon, second as a blinding stone mirror, and third as a sprawling maze whose sounds and sensations embrace the traveler in a slow and languid frenzy. Quite famously, it is home to countless locked eyes and spellbound hearts. It is a place whose deep currents of longing, like the sound of its ocean shore, seem to rumble and hiss under the surface of every word and gesture, in every bead of sweat that blooms from the glimmering skin of its people.

Saphira is at all times caught between a low-lying sun to the west and a glowing moon to the east. They hang above the skyline with an eerie stillness, watching the city’s tireless creatures writhe together in tenderness and sin, casting upon them a pale, silvery gold light that hangs heavy in the humid air. It is in the tension of this peculiar light and its slender, tangled shadows that Saphira’s longing grows dense and time thickens within its walls. Traveler and resident alike are suspended in an endless eros, caught tightly between pain and pleasure, between the sting of saltwater in one’s eyes and the sticky sweetness of ripe fruit on one’s lips. 

Perhaps this is why Saphira’s radios and televisions stutter with phrases and images so ghostly yet so intimately familiar, why its dusty buildings seem always to crumble so gloriously yet never collapse, why around every corner there is a street that so closely resembles one of a distant and loving memory, and why the curling flakes of paint on its walls and facades will reach out against the heat without fading or falling. It is a city inside of want and outside of time.

A couple months ago I started a project to turn my normal journaling process into a channel flipping experience! All the scratch work and raw ideas packaged together. I noticed I loved listening to all my nascent and unfinished ideas playing through my composition journals, so I decided all the new ones I would start making into a listening experience!
