Time Of Night

This tune was composed by Pepper Adams for his quartet's 1975 live recording session at the Domicile jazz club in Munich, Germany. The original recording, which is the opening track from the first album created from that material, "Julian", can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGhXDxuJjeM. Intended as a tribute to George Mraz, his Czech Republic-born close friend and all-time favorite bass player, Pepper took George's birth name, Jiří, and combined it with his Americanized name to create the tune's title, "Jirge." Appropriately, the unique and challenging melody is played by bari sax and bass in harmony. Pepper even went as far as to include a disclaimer in his introduction of the tune, warning the audience that the group might have to stop a take and start over due to it being "the most difficult single piece of music that [they had] to work with." I recommend listening with headphones so that the bass's harmony can be heard.
