The first in a series of radiophonic works commissioned by Pyramid Club with the support of Creative New Zealand. This episode is from foreign correspondent Misha Marks.

Misha writes "The recordings in this podcast were made in 2015 and 2016 during several visits to the mountainous region of the Sierra Juárez, Oaxaca, in southwest Mexico, in the towns of San Bartolomé Zoogocho, Santa María Tavehua and Villa Hidalgo Yalálag. Roughly structured in the order of the time of day in which each recording was made, they offer an idea of the extraordinary sound-world and music of these villages throughout the course of a day during the fiestas patronales (festivities in honour of the patron saint). Plus a few recordings from non-fiesta times, and ending with funeral music recorded during a wake in Villa Hidalgo Yalálag."

Exclusive soundtrack from artist, curator, facilitator, writer and researcher Clinton Green(Undecisive God)will be sharing a brand new piece plus chatting about his two decades experience in the experimental music scene.

Clinton Green makes something akin to music. Formerly recording under the moniker of Undecisive God, Clinton has been active in Australian experimental music since the 1990s as a recording and performing artist, curator and beyond. Working with unconventional approaches to guitars, turntables and found objects as tools for new forms of musical expression, he has also worked with dancers, theatre and performance artists in improvised collaborative situations. Clinton runs the Shame File Music label and writes on/researches historical and contemporary aspects of Australian experimental music. 

Clinton's piece is described as "A soundtrack for excerpts from Homer's epic poem of war, love and fate, created with turntables and radio. Sean Baxter's "Solo Drumkit Improvisations" LP and Todd Anderson-Kunert's "The Situation We're In" EP are used prominently in this piece." Tingle - "I Wanna Be A Tree"

Part 1 of the four part recording 'Turntable At Dawn'.  As the title indicates, this recording was made in my backyard at dawn in my backyard on 6 January 2012.  My instrument was an 'acoustic turntable', where objects and percussive instruments are placed on the turntable platter to create chaotic rhythms, in this case attempting to integrate with the ambient sound in the backyard (both natural and industrial).

The full recording will be released on a limited edition of 30 numbered CDs in November 2012.  Each cover is unique, incorporating pressed flora and herbs from the recording location. Anbessa Gebrehiwot and Haftu Reda are masterful players of krar and masinko, traditional string instruments from Eritrea and Ethiopia. Now based in Melbourne, Australia, the pair collaborate with producer and multi-instrumentalist Dale Gorfinkel to create an innovative sound that celebrates their East African culture.

The five recordings collected here range from modern takes on folk songs to new, original compositions, with Anbessa’s strong vocal presence a perfect match to Haftu’s sweet lyrical modesty.
