Working Title; a project in co-curation

In the postmodern world of today, the work of curators has become increasingly diverse. The job content has shifted from a simple model of guarding, keeping or acquiring a collection, to a compound model, adding the possibility of acquiring a semi celebrity status identity.

We are part of a generation that has spent their childhood growing up with an invisible third parent, the internet. We are able to discover music faster and easier than ever before. But even with all these options, an individual curator can never truly see the whole picture.

The idea for this project is simple and goes as follows;
Instead of curating artists ourselves, we will have others curate together. Our project can be seen as an exercise in joint curatorship. We have invited fourteen different collectives, labels and individuals who in their turn curated one artist.

HeadDirt5 features Person of The Year by Charles Verni and Cheap Trick by angelicaa. Both audio works are inspired by YouTube. The two artists have released three EPs together on London label Cherche Encore since 2018 (Can of Worms, BB & The Remixes).

HeadDirt is an experimental radio series created and curated by angelicaa, aiming to showcase multidisciplinary artists, peers and personal influences. Interweaved with music from the past, recent past and present. HeadDirt is a formula and a feeling to be enjoyed – an offset palate, creating something weird and beautiful for the digital sphere.

"Person of the Year", is a composition inspired by the life and work of Brooke 'Brookers' Brodack and the optimism of early Web 2.0. Across a score which samples her video "Web Celebrity" (2007) an AI generation of 'Brookers' voice narrates Time's 2006 Person of the Year article, "You”. In it's choice of "You", Time aimed to recognize the millions of people who anonymously contribute user-generated content to websites such as YouTube, MySpace and Wikipedia and in turn "change the way the world changes".

“Cheap Trick” replicates a world full of digital noise using ripped audio, revealing habitual popularised online enquiry – a process of elimination, association, memory, archive and instinct. An inaudible Godflesh interview threads throughout grounding the piece in its hidden contextual root – “Head Dirt”, a track released by Godflesh in 1989 from their album “Streetcleaner” – a live version plays near the start.

HeadDirt5 (Montez Press Radio) - angelicaa with Charles Verni

Born and raised in Istanbul, Zeynep Ağcabay’s music explores the juxtaposition of Eastern and Western influences on their identity. Growing up with traditional Turkish music playing at home, Zeynep went on to discover new roots in London in 2016. Their experimental approach aims to discover a unique blend of these two sonic worlds.

Heres what Zeynep Ağcabay had to say:

The mix comprises a combination ofTurkish folk songs and tracks that remind me of back home. After the earthquakes in Southeast Turkey hit, I had a strong urge to dedicate this mix to my father’s roots in Gaziantep. It has ended up feeling very spiritual and almost ritualistic in its mood.

The mix starts with an original by me sampling the Turkish instrument Ney. Then moving on to the music of Sufism followed by a recording of a performance by Kayhan Kalor and Erdal Erzincan live in Tehran which I feel is incredibly transcendental. Their collaboration is the perfect representation of SWANA ambient folk. Later down the mix you will hear a remix of my Dad and Uncle playing instruments Baglama and Kanun and my late Grandma’s favourite folk song sung beautifully by Seha Okus.

The mix ends on some of the SWANA artists I vastly enjoy listening to who have done great work merging the modern production techniques to traditional sounds of the region.
