On this episode of Classical Chicago, Cedille President Jim Ginsburg talks with clarinetist John Bruce Yeh, who has served the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as assistant principal clarinetist since 1979, about his experience recording "Chicago Clarinet Classics."

The New York Philharmonic is joined by the New York Choral Artists (Joseph Flummerfelt, Director) for Giuseppe Verdi's Messa da Requiem.  The recording was made in January, 2015 and features an all-star quartet of soloists: Soprano Angela Meade; Mezzo-Soprano Lilli Paasikivi; Tenor Russell Thomas, and Bass-Baritone Eric Owens (the Philharmonic's 2015/16 Artist-in-Residence.) Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts. The broadcast host is Alec Baldwin.

Alan Gilbert conducts the Verdi Requiem

Former CSO Principal Conductor Bernard Haitink leads one of Mahler's most enigmatic yet enticing symphonies. Abandoning the programmatic stories of his early symphonies, Mahler presents a vividly orchestrated, magical tour following his own dictum: "A symphony must be like the world—it must embrace everything." Unforgettable are the haunting horn calls, which open the second movement's "night music," awakening a throng of animated sounds.

The New York Philharmonic is joined by soprano Dorothea Röschmann; mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter; tenor Steve Davislim, and 2015/16 Artist-in-Residence Eric Owens, bass-baritone, plus the New York Choral Artists for a complete performance of Bach's b-minor Mass.  Alec Baldwin is the program host and Alan Gilbert conducts.

The Lincoln Trio is renowned for creating “worthwhile programs of serious classical music that are wholly winning and simply delightful” (ClassicsToday.com). For its newest Cedille Records album, “the brilliant Chicago-based Lincoln Trio” (WRTI-FM, Philadelphia) of violinist Desirée Ruhstrat, cellist David Cunliffe, and pianist Marta Aznavoorian has crafted a highly personal program of inventive 20th-century piano trios by composers from the individual players’ ancestral homelands of Switzerland, England, and Armenia, respectively.
