Ah, I'm still working on the best notation to share with my tap dancing pal. This was a combination of graphic score and oral tradition/collaboration, filmed, then steps chosen. It's a lot more fun to watch!

Quiet In The Barn

The PianoLodeon is a "Player" Toy Piano that was originally manufactured by the J. Chein & Co. toy company in the late 1950's. Boasting a surprisingly large library of unique rolls, kids of all ages could sing along with tunes like "Sweet Georgia Brown" or "Alexander's Ragtime Band" as the authentic vacuum-driven player mechanism brought an array of carefully placed dots into scintillating musical life! Of course one could also play along themselves - the PianoLodeon has a soft, rounded tone that distinguishes itself from other more metallic-sounding Toy Pianos, and a respectable keyboard of 30 keys (though the rolls only use the lower 23). When I rescued this particular PianoLodeon from a state of lamentable disrepair earlier this year, I did so with the ambition of someday manufacturing my own customized rolls by hand. At last, I finally set aside the time to cut a short test composition - only about 40 seconds long - to see what kind of company PianoLodeon and I make for a musical duo.

In this part, I am playing a lightly prepared big-kids' piano (masking tape, chopsticks, tambourine, spiral-bound notebook, plastic sanding block), guitar, accordion, bowed bass guitar, bells, zither, trombone, clarinet, and assorted percussion. Making its world debut in this recording is the Turbulophone, a musical instrument consisting of a motorized, rotating vane which wafts air past the ends of tuned plastic tubes. You might be able to identify this as the faint "gurgle" that is heard at the start and then continuously throughout the piece.
