There’s no such things as a free lunch, especially on the internet. 

Ads were always a nuisance, first in Radio, then in TV, now on YouTube. The problem is – and I don’t have to mention that in the Lines community - that other people are making the money, not the artist, unless you’re really popular. If I upload my track to YouTube (it’s Creative Commons), Google will inject at least 2-3 ads and cash in the money without my consent. And I’ll never see a cent of that. 

The idea of injecting ads to break the cycle, as the assignment says, came fast. But it took two days until I had „the product“  ready. It contains Playbox, the awesome Mercury from Cherry Audio, SQ-80, Reaktor and a ton of drums. I also recorded some ads from YouTube and skipped them after the obligatory seconds. Mixing took another half day, so I spent at least 12-18 hours with the assignment.

Music In The Age Of Internet Capitalism (Ads Version) [disquiet0553]

My submission to the #DisquietJunto 553 with the assignment: Record in a steady tempo but break it on occasion. It's a simple 8-step sequence. Gates from the 5th and 7th step are sent through a Bernoulli gate, which is set to 10%, to the reset intput. So on avarage 1 in 10 times step number 5 and 6 are played and 1 in 100 step 7 and 8. The gate from step 8 is connected to the Stop-input and a cymbel-sound, so after on avarage 100 cycles the piece will end with a crash. Every first step moves the second sequence which moves the bass and the melody and chords with it. The result is a simple tune that would nicely disappear into the background, except every now and then something happens that makes you look up.

Disquiet Junto Project 0554: Cage Chord
The Assignment: Riff on a chord by John Cage.

This project is the third of three that are being done in collaboration with the 2022 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 7 through 11. The topic this year is “unvermittelt,” which is a little tricky to translate. Literally it’s “unmediated,” but it can also mean “sudden,” “abrupt,” or “immediate.”

We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who is in charge of the educational activities of the festival. This is the fourth year in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern.

Select recordings resulting from these three Disquiet Junto projects will be played and displayed throughout the festival.

Step 2: You might read up a bit about the source of the chord, the piece “Organ²/ASLSP” by John Cage. Cage desired the piece to be played “As Slow As Possible.” Currently it is being performed in Halberstadt, Germany, on a special organ that will play it for a total of 639 years. It’s been going for 21 years so far, and is at this moment playing the above chord. Read up here:

Step 3: Produce a loopable drone (duration between one and three minutes) of your own based on that chord.

Note: Submitted drones will be sequenced into one large drone piece to be played at the Cage Room, a pop-up workshop and exhibition space of the festival at Progr, Bern, Switzerland.

The Assignment: Riff on a chord by John Cage.

I split up the chord into a fistful of Ableton Live tracks, all with (not too) different Kontakt instruments and placed them in space by pan and reverb. Every note had a chance of being played of 50% per 90bpm bar. Some noise was added because I felt it being too clean, accepting that this and too much movement would maybe not correspond with the spirit of Cage's piece. An export was done and the mix happened in Reaper, where a Valhalla Delay with 4 bars lenght on the master track repeated whatever is played to smear the notes into each other. The result was the 8 minute track https://soundcloud.com/winterer/chord-cage. I took a 3 minute part out of this and made it into a loop by adding the beginning to the end to comply with the rules. The Loop version was intended to be a byproduct; after listening to the looped version looping for half an hour while creating the cover I'm not so sure whether I really prefer the long Chord Cage, which works standalone with no context, over the Chord Cage Loop, which can be played virtually endless.

L'accordo musicale completo viene usato dagli strumenti che producono la fascia continua di base. Le singole note dell'accordo servono invece per creare gli elementi ritmici che si sovrappongono a questa base, che sono loops di percussioni/batteria processati da campionatori granulari.

The full chord is used by the instruments that produce the basic continuous sound. The single notes of the chord are used instead to create the rhythmic elements that overlap the base, percussion / drum samples processed by granular samplers.

Well, this was fun. And fast, which is important for me at the moment, since I'm having a hard time splitting my spare time between several demanding projects. Oh well.

First of all, I found out THE BRAIN can only process .wav, so I had to convert mp3 and aiff. Afterwards I loaded my samples, choosing the "rainwhispers" as the loop. And then I recorded, manipulating mainly the "mix" section. The resulting wavs I put into Ableton Live, faded in the audio and exported. I like how most passages are "raining" at you.

I wouldn't necessarily call this a piece of music, but it is interesting sound, especially the wet sounds starting at about 3:15. I am absolutely unsure if I could reproduce what I did here ;)

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
