This music is a gift from her husband, Irving, and an honor for me to create, and is considered a "One Day Work" in my rubric of personal musical portrait-making. The composition process picked up on the threads of my conversation with Joanne, as she shared with me about her textile artistry, re-purposing decades-old creations into new ones, and her affinity with her own ancestry, as well as the thoughtful relationship she has with grief and death. It was an inspiration to work on, and performing it will become a mainstay of my Lithia Park repertoire.
