This work is written with an inverse variation approach, in that the folksong itself is not realized until the last three variations. The original melody is chopped and fragmented into ever unrecognizable pieces, existing in a non-congruent environment, gradually these fragments strive to coalesce again.

Three Pieces for Flute, Viola and Guitar

This original composition for electronic sounds and electric guitar is centered around the deep ambient resonance of the TON 618 black hole. Each time its haunting presence emerges, it warps the surrounding elements—human speech and electric guitar textures—twisting them through extreme time-stretching and distortion. In the rare moments when the black hole recedes, the listener is met with the eerie echoes of a medieval choir, offering a brief, uncanny contrast.

Performed by Juliet Fraser (Soprano) and Maxime Desert (Viola)at the 2017 edition of the Académie Voix Nouvelles in Royaumont. 

Attics is composed for soprano Juliet Fraser and Maxime Desert of Quatour Tana. The work investigates the inner workings of a confused mind in solitude, with an equally dilapidated stream of consciousness to follow. Juliet’s part is made of up both text and gestures, the latter signifying a search of some kind, an attempt to formulate the right words. The text features poems and prose style writings by various literary figures. It is sometimes sung, at other times recited or whispered, or shouted in frustration. 

With congruency to the state of mind of the speaker, the text is fragmented, with various sections being treated interchangeably. Edgar Allen Poe’s the Bells, Hermann Hesse’s Die Lorelei are the most significant works to appear in this piece, and in many ways, the endeavors of the speaker/singer could be said to be revolving around two. What initially appears to be stagnant texture 
soon turns into one that is drifted away, and torn apart by violent perturbations. At many instances, the viola behaves like an extension of the voice, enhancing its color; the two form one instrument, cruising through a solemn journey.

O Kim?

On Attics is based on a recent work of mine, Attics (2017), composed for soprano and viola. The work revolves around a sound sample taken from the live performance, in which one could hear the words: “and…the danger ebbs and flows”. This sample is subject to repetition and gradual evolution through cross-synthesis. The two other elements comprise sounds generated from the electric guitar and other excerpts that are sampler-manipulated. These two are much more dynamic and overbearing than the main sound sample and therefore come into play as some form of a distraction. The listener is invited into a realm where he/she is to choose how much of the main, slow-evolving entity is to be retained in the mind; the overall perception will be determined by this choice.
