The deep, immersive echo chamber that sits at the centre of DeepChord’s signature work with Echospace may appear inspired by the genre-defining work of first-wave dub-technoists that appeared on the Chain Reaction label in the mid to late 90s. But it’s also work that’s quintessentially building upon the Detroit scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision makes the work of Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell at once so highly considered, so timeless, and so pertinent. The distinguishing feature of the duo’s sound is its ability and willingness to stand still; whereas much of dub techno attempts to propel the listener forward in either a lover’s rock groove or the cushioned reverb of a driving beat, DeepChord’s synth-driven analog warmth trades not only in static ambience but also propulsive design. Their set at Métropolis in 2011 was nothing short of enveloping and transcendent.

Another sublime addition to the Monte Verità mixes by Axel Willner. The third installment, EVP, enters a world shimmering with the sounds of the future in an era where technology promised a new utopia, far off galaxies were within reach, and we listened out into the cosmos expecting contact at any moment.

The Monte Verità mix series was created by our longtime friend Axel Willner (aka The Field), and represents an extensive exploration of his vast and rare vinyl collection. Each mix is a psychedelic trip through lost sonic worlds, offering a deeply personal insight into the music that’s inspired his career.

Amon Tobin occupies a peculiar position in the dance music firmament – a point where the gravitational forces of IDM, EDM, D’n’B and rather more hipster-friendly bass music balance one another out. He’s got every bit the production finesse, and often the weirdness, of WARP luminaries, he can also make some very deep and dark basement-friendly tunes – yet he is something of a rave superstar in the USA, and for The Six Rhythms EP he’s on Dutch loudness-warriors Noisia’s label Division. His Two Fingers guise was originally created for tracks with UK MC Sway, but it’s now an instrumental project. We won’t lie, the other tracks on this EP slide a bit far into stadium rave territory for us, but this one – a healthy dose of body-rocking warehouse electro – does the business and then some. It’s out on 22nd June – you can preorder on the Division site or iTunes.

Drawn to lo fi, apprehensive tempos and gently billowing beat patterns, Montréaler Julien Racine describes his creative process as “soundtrack photography,” sampling bits and bites from his stash of vinyl for his one man, atmospheric assembly, juxtaposing analog sounds with digital processing. A member of the buzzed about Ottawa/Gatineau Fau Mardi A/V collective, which has mobilized a local community of like minded, experimentation prone electronic producers, DJs and VJs, Racine has also shared the Fau Mardi bill with fellow MUTEK performer Simon Labelle (Réservoir, MacGuffin). On the heels of his celestial, independently released EP, Hi Fidelity (mastered by Pheek), Racine opens MUTEK’s Friday EXPÉRIENCE program with a live set of textural ambience, techno and downtempo.
