As an extension of her participation in the CMC Multilocation festival (July 12-23, 2021) we invite claire rousay to join Toronto-based April Aliermo in conversation. Each artist explores the intimate and the personal within their individual sound practice, making for a fertile discussion of meaning and motivations in their work. The conversation will be released as a podcast, and listeners will hear reflections and reactions as claire and April reveal the nature of their creative impulses while triangulating the relationship of space, sound, and feeling.

Canadian Works for Oboe and Piano is a sweeping 2-CD compilation of fine Canadian repertoire for oboe and piano from the past 70 years. A celebration in honour of Canada’s sesquicentennial, the collection highlights the oboe’s personal, singing quality and is unified by the lyrical essence of all the works. This recording includes several Canadian oboe classics, three new works created especially for this project, three new arrangements of existing pieces, and a few interesting discoveries, including the world premiere of a work written some 40 years ago by a major composer but never performed live. The two discs feature an even mix of sonatas, shorter stand-alone works, and what could be considered suites. With one exception, all the works on these discs are receiving their first recorded performances here.

Faster Still takes its name from the album’s second piece, in which the tempo accelerates and slows nearly constantly, turning time into a pliable plaything. Composer Brian Current finds, curiously, that the more continuous the acceleration, the calmer things become – fast and still, once opposites, can exist simultaneously. In Current’s first album of chamber works, time and texture are explored and transformed in ensembles ranging from two cellos (duet for cellos) to a small chamber orchestra with singer (Inventory). Featuring soloists Patricia O’Callaghan, Duo Concertante, the Blue Engine String Quartet, and the VC2 cello duo, Faster Still displays the breadth and depth of Brian Current’s dynamic writing for small ensembles.
