Warm Up 💦 on @n10.as

April's Warm Up 💦 featured a guest dear to my heart, dj sk aka Stuart Oakes. I remember when Stuart was first learning how to dj: we were in my room playing around on my fisher-price-looking white cdj 300s, and within minutes, Stuart had everything figured out. We joked that it was wild beginners luck, but really it was Stuart's lifetime of classical music training that set them up to be a great dj off the bat.

Soon after that, Stuart came to play at Sleepy Victim’s Unit, the residency that Efemmera and I had at the Beaver at the time (RIP </3). And now, many years later, here we are together again!

More recently, Stuart had a dreamy makeout mix come out on Hearth Audio and guested on True Connection. 

This mix, in their own words, is the result of a lot of pent-up chaotic energy:  “like most people, I had a pretty terrible February and spent a lot of it in bed. My goal was to touch all four cardinal points [of the Warm Up show]: hot, heavy, weird & slimy.”

True to form, this mix has everything baked in, but is still comes off as a cohesive whole. Another nod to Stuart's impeccable ear

Warm Up 💦 w/ Abhi, on n10.as - 2021-05-04

For June's Warm Up, I am so excited to host my pal Arnav Luthra! It’s a nice coincidence that we aired the day after what would have been movement weekend too. I fondly remember leading a little yoga stretch at some silly hour of the morning one memorial day for Arnav and I, on the floor of Ben Streaks (Young Muscle's) Detroit living room as we were resting, waiting to go from one party to the next.

Sofia (Efemmera), Abhi (last month’s guest), and I met Arnav while visiting Davis Curry (another past guest!) in Pittsburgh in 2018. Nothing brings folks together like a Hot Mass dance floor and we went on to be good friends from there! 

In this mix, Arnav, a Hot 'N Spicy NYC resident, took the name "Warm Up" quite literally and recorded what would be a perfect opener. He also took it as a metaphorical Warm Up for getting back into mixing and dance music after a few months' hiatus. Tracks from Ali Berger, Jack Ward, Russel E.L Butler, LSDXOXO, the Daytimers crew. You may remember Justin from our appearance at Onaire together last month or from his extended opening set before legend dj nobu in november or from the birthday party I threw for myself in October, where he dragged his equipment halfway across the city to my house to dj all night -- like literally all night, showed up at 9 and left at 3 😮

Justin is a founding resident of the @microminimalrecords show on Threads Radio and a curator for the microminimal label. For December’s Warm up he put together an hr of heady minimal tech punctuated by a few key Detroit chuggers. Look out for tracks from Ricardo Villalobos, DVS1, Function, Traumprinz, Monolake, and iO.

Warm Up 💦 w/ Parting, on n10.as - 2019-12-03

Warm Up for December features @maneaterdetroit boss and longtime dancefloor angel @kelsdavidson <3. I met kels thru @efemmera many years ago in detroit, somehow at every party we went to over the years, and always happy to see us. Kels even came by when ali put us on at takoi.

As if coming full circle, I was listening to this mix earlier and shazamed a track that rly got me near the end. Turns out it was off the latest two track EP from Ali on Southern Belle Recordings 🙈. Keeping the pal hour going kels also lay down a Vanity Press Hot n Ready edit, and a mind melter of an intro playing kelela into Russell Butler ft. Indy nyles [ Sublimate Records] & Kesswa on top of that.

Since then, she’s moved to Brooklyn taking the maneater mix series w her. Find her at the end of the month at Jupiter Disco.

Tune in for an hr of R'n'B vocals, eclectic percussions, old disco, bubbling electro & everything in between.

March's Warm Up 💦on @n10-as features friendly neighbourhood cat daddy 🐈 and all around helpful goth, Cjris Pyss. Shout out to all the help Cjris gives @oepresents!! From poster designs to driving artists around to bartending to helping us load out piles of heavy shit at 6am.

Cjris has past releases under the name @distraksjon, but lately you may have seen him sneaking onto lineups shrouded in mystery as << Dr. Blowfin jr >>. It’s a Drexciya reference, and Chris described it as a fun lil name for playing electro and weird stuff that he wouldn’t necessarily play at peak club hours.

He def stayed true to his electro heart w this one giving us an hr of big boom claps, squelchy acid lines, growly bass, shimmery melodies and the otherwise chaotic electro u know and love.

Warm Up 💦 w/ Dr. Blowfin Jr, on n10.as - 2020-03-03

April's Warm Up 💦 was a very special collab from angels Khary (@couldbek) and Brendan (@bee-edits)!! I met Brendan through @efemmera around the time that we first started going out to dance shows. There was a weird-as-hell Vatican Shadow show that took place at comfort zone, of all places, but early. Like, done by midnight early. We were tweeting about it afterwards and someone Sofia knew from TRP at the time (RIP 😭) showed up in the replies. It was Brendan! I met Khary through Brendan a little bit later, back when everyone went to 76a every weekend.

Lots has happened since then! We’ve shared dances at The Beaver, all along Geary, and across many years of Pride. Khary and I have played a few steamy Nightshift shows with Val. One of On Earth's early guests, Dj Python, stayed with Brendan when he came to town, and Brendan and I even helped paint a stranger’s house once upon a time.

They’re also both great djs 😍 Khary used to throw a recurring party at the Beaver, and for many Brendan dj’ed a weekly party in Guelph. Now they do an on-and-off party called Queer Logic with their friends angie la la and Sareh, which started at Less Bar in its short but beautiful lifespan on Bloor. It was the Queer logic crew who shared their invites with Sofia and I to go to Sustain for the first time a few years ago. Brendan, who’s been going every year and organizing the now legendary basketball tournament, even lent us his car to drive down.

This mix was meant to be a b2b, but nature had other plans so it’s Brendan in the first half, Khary in the second! These selections are truly close to my own heart. Tune in for tracks from TSVI, Batu, Equinoxx, Deena Abdelwahed, DJ Lag, Ariel Zetina,and new Joy Overmono.

May on Warm Up 💦 had a debut mix from the Hits Only duo!! 🎉🎉🎉

Hits Only is a collab between PGH ones to watch @davisgalvin && @aliberger. Both these pals showed up on last year's @oepresent's "On Earth + Friends" line ups. Both are super prolific producers on their own, but they have some _hits_ (🤭) together too, including a number on the Is/Was PGH Electro comp, a record so good I accidentally tried to buy it twice 🙈

In this hour they played a lot of slowed-down stuff, including a bunch of new purchases from the bandcamp day no fees day 💸💸. Some delay pedal in here to get things bouncing around.

Warm Up 💦 was back on @n10-as radio this pas July with a cute one from Karim Mohamed aka @Kaspr_to. Karim gave us an emotional mix traversing a lot of territory:

"This mix embodies a series of emotions I've experienced in the past couple months, and where I'm at in this moment. Some of anger, despair, frustration, UNCERTAINTY, helplessness, etc. While it might not necessarily sound as so, these songs soothe said emotions.

Max moved to Toronto some years ago after living in Ottawa and Montreal and now helps put on a small party called “the smol party” aka “club format” with lily, wafa, and hanna, (who is responsible for another n10as show, @femme-noise). Max is also part of a new mobile soundsystem project called best in town sound, soon to be operating from shores and the bush around toronto 🤫

Max’s mix leads us through how he’s been feeling lately:
“since march i’ve been seeking out slower and softer music (and often just silence), which is where the mix starts. dance music has not connected with me nearly as much recently, but the inspiration is still there. the second half of the mix speaks to that.”

Lauren is a power house beyond the deck, too, riding for representation at national and international levels of the music scene 🤘🏽. She co-founded the VIA Festival & the gFx collective, she’s a Hot Mass resident, and a curator for Public Records NYC, New Forms Festival, and more.
 
@oepresents was lucky enough to host her here in Toronto last year for one of my favourite editions of OE+Friends. As lockdown progressed earlier this year, June's episode of Warm Up 💦 on @n10-as saw @IllegalTapes label boss and booking agent @rxdazn lay down an hour of dark & sweaty club basement vibes including some uk funky, drum heavy club tracks, and a lot of wobbly dub action.

Rx's dj style takes no prisoners 😼 weaving flawlessly between  everything from Flowdan to SBTRKT to Zora Jones and BANKS club reworks, all peppered with tried and true clangers from the likes of Sudanim, Andrea, Aquarian, Lighter (" the best drum track in the world [Lighter - Skanker]" - rx)

At the time of airing, we were raising money for blacklivesmatter.ca and managed to raise $180 USD in total :)

Warm Up 💦 w/ rxdazn, on n10.as - 2020-06-02

January’s Warm Up 💦 guest was my @oepresents crewmate and longtime techno mama, @Kehdo!! If I scan back through my memories, I think the initial idea for OE Presents actually started with Kate. Looking back a little further, the fact that I even started dj’ing at all was also due to some strategic pressure from Kate. Kate’s been riding for the local scene for as long as I’ve known her 🤘🏽, always putting on the underdog, always spreading whatever resources she has around, always cheering everybody on and thinking about the next big thing. Needless to say, I think she’s pretty great 🥺🥺🥺
 
This mix is Kate’s vibe for a quieter and gloomier winter - enveloping and gentle on the nervous system  . Warm up your ears for the day with deep bass and crystal melody-lines. Kate takes us from 120bpm to 170bpm and back again crossing through drum and bass, pretty techno, shimmery dub, and a then cashing out with The Rah Band’s “Messages from the star”, perfectly wrapping up the shimmering vibes of the hour before. The tracklist features some recent cuts from Donato Dozzy, Akasha System, and iota, too.


Kate’s done some pretty cool shit in recent times, playing with Veronica Vasicka, Dj Stingray, Jasmine Infinity, Anthony Parasole and touring LA, mexico city, Montreal, and Detroit.
