Ｉ ー ＭＡＮＧＲＯＯＶＥ

Early 90s. Olinda, Pernambuco. A small town on Brazil's northeast coast. The same region where, three centuries earlier, Zumbi and Dandara would kick off the largest slavery rebellion, resisting and creating the first authentic Brazilian society.

Chico Science, Fred 04 and the Manguebeat artists, probably inspired by the same rebellious spirit, started an art movement capable of encouraging young artists and still relevant to modern-day social issues.   

Thirty years after the release of "Da Lama Ao Caos", we return to Manguetown, where everything started, exploring the chaotic fusion of rhythms that, once embraced, can only trigger a revolution.

Looking at the power of acid house, techno, tribal, and the global electronic scene, it's all an interconnected movement of crabs taking over. Chico is alive, and his message is in total progress.

Time to travel to the XVIII century in Maranhão, a region where colonisers were busy with cattle and cotton. In this unique setting, the Bumba-Meu-Boi folk tale unfolds, a story unlike any other.

Every child in Brazil has had the chance to see and live the story, but few can realise what is behind it—a lesson on forgiveness and the power of a community when working together. Racism is still an issue across the country, and we must address it. To be mature enough to talk about. What the Bumba story brings us is a perspective of hope. A rebirth is only made possible by love.

There is a level of richness in Brazilian/Latin culture that still amazes me. The more you explore, the more you discover how ignorant you are. I love bossa nova. I am a big samba lover. But this particular set is my humble way of introducing two distinct sounds to the world: Tambor de crioula and Forró.

ii: Bumba

ＩＩＩ ー ＣＡＲＩＭＢＯＯＧＩＥ

Our expedition this time takes us into the richest region on the planet: the Amazon rainforest. The biodiversity here is one of the greatest treasures entrusted to Latin America. Countries like Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, and Ecuador are responsible for preserving this vast natural ecosystem. However, it's important to note that while Westerners often seek to exploit it in a predatory manner, the ancient indigenous tribes play a crucial role as nature defenders, and we should respect and appreciate their efforts.

Many rhythms are born in this mythical and enchanted part of the world. The blend of Indigenous and African cultures in this fertile region has given rise to a hypnotic and upbeat rhythm known as Carimbó. Women in long dresses spin gracefully, their skirts fanning out like flowers in the air. Cumbia, Salsa, and Merengue also share a common heritage. This is a historical testament to how different cultures can create a lasting legacy.

As time passes, the vibrant calypso groove continues to evolve, incorporating electronic beats from dance music. This evolution is an exciting aspect of the Amazon's musical scene, and I invite you to explore the Amazon in a new way—embrace its natural beauty and rich culture while seeking one final destination: Rubi, the legendary technobrega soundsystem.

ＩV ー S A M B A   H O U S E

Speaking about samba is never too much when exploring Brazilian genres. It's mandatory. It is the core of the Brazilian soul, the mother-beat from which everything descends. It is hard to define it. A genre? A dance? A culture? A community? All of the above? 

Having grown up listening to samba, witnessing it being played in the streets, and enjoying concerts, I define samba as a religion. We are never specifically taught the lyrics; instead, the perfect blend of its rhythm and melodic poetry allows each song to resonate intuitively.  

Samba is intense. The multitude of sounds and the powerful beats from various drums can be overwhelming for a first-time listener. However, samba was never intended to be gentle. It is a popular expression of the marginalized. It serves as a voice for the unheard, allowing them to feel acknowledged and validated in their existence. 

Samba is an act of resistance and a declaration of love. It embodies the DNA of Brazil's culture. Its complexity cannot be distilled into a single definition, and that richness is what makes it so splendid, majestic, and elegant. No, do never let the samba die, as the song says. I'm sure it won't, and here I present its influence on dance music.

Saravá, a welcoming salutation from Afro religions common in Brazil, mostly predominant in Bahia. Where everything started and where our journey ends.

Bahia is a world unto itself—magical and beautiful—and it is where Brazil's story begins for the Western world. A strong energy resides in the same place where the losses from colonization occurred. When communities came together to preserve their identity, they became unstoppable. Their voices grew louder, and the world began to feel the powerful bass of the steel drums.

Axé is more than just joy; it embodies the history and culture passed down through generations. Grief is expressed in the rhythm, while the melody soothes pain and liberates an oppressed population from suffering. It stands as an ancient reminder that we must remain strong and stay united with our brothers and sisters despite all challenges. 

I present to you the mix I created with all my heart. This is my favorite one, meant to wash away our sadness. I hope you enjoy. Saravá! Axé!
