WAITERS are from Manchester, England. WHAT FOR ART THOU is their first studio recorded EP and their first new material in over a year. The 12" EP will be released in a super limited edition of 100 with screen printed sleeves designed by Matthew Walkerdine and Laetitia Glenton. 

WAITERS chiming, emotive guitars, rudimentary drums and minimalist arrangements have been previously heard on a string of releases on Comfortable On A Tightrope, Bijin Record, Birthday Tapes and Night School among others. Named in alignment with  The Shop Assistants, Waitresses and The Servants and taking cues from Salem 66, The Trypes, Love Child and c. WAITERS deal in a kind of restrained abstract form of late 20th century un-Popular music.

Rich in natural imagery and autumn colour, Depth of Field twists and turns on the super melodic guitar line of the verse and a lush, dreamy chorus extolling the virtues of uncertainty.

Sea Pinks, Belfast’s finest purveyors of bittersweet guitar pop since 2010, return with the first single from the their sixth long player Watercourse, due for summer 2017. Into Nowhere sees them picking up where 2016’s acclaimed Soft Days left off, taking the dream pop sound palette of that record up a notch and twisting it around in the process. It’s a song that swerves and dives, the verse’s arpeggiated fatalism giving way to first defiance, then full blooded euphoria in the choruses. Clear eyed and buoyant, it’s the sound of winter giving way to spring.

Minimum Wage collects together all eight BBC session tracks recorded by Sea Pinks since 2012 along with three brand new recordings, including the all new title track. 

Recorded at the all analogue Lullabye Factory studio in Amsterdam during a day off on their 2017 European Tour, opener Minimum Wage is three and a half minutes of fuzzed out tour fatigue and exasperation caught in a single take on two inch tape. It’s a much more abrasive sound than those who have only heard Sea Pinks on record will be accustomed to, but it captures the frenetic, borderline aggressive energy of the band at their live best. “I’m sick of complaining”  sings Neil Brogan, and he sounds it, the oxymoronic refrain of the verse bleeding into the fuzztoned euphoria of the wordless chorus. It’s a blistering opening to this compilation of sessions, the bulk of which come from the band’s three BBC performances recorded in 2012 and 2016 respectively. Revisiting albums from Dead Seas and Freak Waves to Soft Days and Watercourse the album also features a killer, definitive new version of their first ever single Japanese Knotweed. Across its eleven tracks Minimum Wage works both as a companion to the band’s studio output of the last seven years and as a short, sharp, catalogue spanning Iive set in its own right.

Ain't Goin' Nowhere - Charles Hurts/Hello Translinks?

"These are strange, uncertain times. It might seem odd to be full of the joys of spring right now, given the constant newsfeed of anxiety. But hear me out. Our songs are often described as bittersweet. The words may be ambivalent, or even on occasion downright sad, but the melody will usually be buoyant and bright. Bearing this mind we decided to go all out, and make something unequivocally happy for once. This song is unapologetic in its lack of irony. It’s a little three minute detour, a portal into a suburban garden shaking off the last frost, sunshine bouncing off dewdrops, saturation dialled right up. Pure, undiluted, deeply unfashionable, guitar oriented pop. We recorded and mixed it ourselves earlier this month, tracking at our practice space, and decided to throw it out there as close as possible to the time of its making. It’s best listened to out of doors. So take it with you next time you go for a walk, drive, pedal boat swan ride or whatever. Preferably somewhere with terrible 4G. And allow yourself to be transported, just for a moment, from the sheer fuckery of it all."

Rockpool Blue is the title track from the seventh album by Belfast's Sea Pinks, due to be released September 28th via CF Records. It's a song steeped in natural wonder, inspired by the changing colour of the human eye in the earliest stages of life. A loping, dreamy post punk guitar line builds to a huge chorus invoking geothermal forces, before looping back into a soaring solo, and starting over. It's Sea Pinks at their most anthemic and wistful, joining songs like Depth of Field (from 2016's Soft Days) among the more transcendent in their catalogue.
