Trinidad, I Love You!
The Story Of A Song For A Nation

In 1986, Trinidadian, Sterling Gittens was an unemployed young musician experiencing life in abject poverty, living in a two-bedroom house with just one wall still standing. As he prayed to God for opportunities, Unbeknownst to him at the time, he would soon be given a gift that few in this world will ever receive. Seeking to make sense of his situation and using his God-given abilities in music to cope with life, Sterling penned the lyrics to a new song.

Upon hearing the news of an upcoming festival for songwriters, Sterling reached out to his friend, Stephen Encinas, who sat with him at a piano and together they recorded a quick demo of his new song, to immediately submit it for entry into the festival’s competition. Sterling, along with 9 other finalists, were selected to perform their original compositions.

On the day of the competition, Sterling found himself at a christian camp in Victory Heights. Leaving camp that day, Sterling set out for the festival where he would soon captured the 1987 National songwriting festival Award and returned to Victory Heights with his first trophy in hand for the moving original, “Trinidad, I Love You!'

1990 was shaping up to be a very promising year for Sterling as He would soon be signing the first ever recording contract for a Trinidadian native, with the Caribbean Song Basin Record Label. On July 27th, 1990, While awaiting his grandmother to be released from treatment at a local hospital’s emergency room, Police and Emergency Services began streaming into the hospital with wounded officers and civilians to be treated for injuries sustained during what would soon become known as the Jamaat El Muslimeen coup attempt.

With the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago struggling to come to terms with this unprecedented attack on the peace and stability of their nation, a pivotal moment had presented itself to Sterling. Recognizing the need for unity and comfort of his beloved homeland, he delivers the original song demo submission of “Trinidad, I Love You!” to Allen Diaz at Radio 100 FM and within days other Radio stations had followed suit and had added “Trinidad, I Love You!” into heavy rotation where it stayed for months and was reported to have been played to start and end each broadcast day, in some cases, up to two years after the coup attempt.

As the vibrant and culturally-diverse nation of Trinidad and Tobago celebrates it’s independence this year, it’s unity, once again, will be center-stage for all nations to behold.

Sterling Gittens’ rich history of triumph over adversity runs parallel with that of his birthplace and yet, unlike many talented citizens who have eventually went on to impact the many nations of the world, one of Sterling’s most cherished gifts will always be the legacy of a song that served as a calming agent to a nation in turmoil and an anthem of unity and love that captures the glorious spirit of Trinidad and Tobago’s history and the potential it’s future beckons it to grasp hold of.
