Now that Burning Man has passed on by and we look back at the week that was, we wanted to find out what makes our favorite daytime celebration on the playa tick. San Francisco-based Pink Mammoth has been providing an incredibly satisfying dance floor for patrons who want to move their feet on the desert dust for the better part of eleven years. That’s nothing to gloss over. Pink Mammoth is known as a beacon for top shelf music and they consistently curate some of the industry’s best performers to help them craft the perfect vibe. There is an unmistakable feeling of warmth and excitement when pulling your bike up to the camp that is hard to find anywhere else. You’re greeted with smiling faces everywhere and everyone’s spirits are high.

The most fascinating aspect about Pink Mammoth is that with the rising notoriety of Burning Man itself as well as it becoming a premier stage for underground performers, they have consistently stayed true to their roots and regularly give to their community back home. They are an important piece in the fabric of the dance culture in San Francisco and should be considered a benchmark for how to do things right. SoundPark sat down with some of the core members (Jonathan Will, Derek Hena, Rob Adelmann and Zach Walker) to discuss what Pink Mammoth means not only during the one week in the desert, but all year round.

Have you ever wanted something your whole adult life that was just out of your reach? Have you worked really, really hard to get somewhere, to achieve some seemingly unattainable goal? Have you poured countless hours over decades into a craft that is your labor of love? Do you struggle with carving out following or a way to connect with the masses in an overly saturated, not quite so artistic marketplace that is bogged down by mediocrity and an absurdly low bar of entry?

If so you will resonate deeply with this moment. Getting the incredible opportunity to DJ at Opulent Temple was a culmination of twenty years of hard work, the kind of stage I've always wanted to play on, at an event that I call home. The response was overwhelming and I can't thank everyone enough for supporting me here and at every step along the way.

The point is to DANCE TOGETHER to amazing music, to experience one-ness with strangers, to share a moment of connection in our isolated experiences fo the world. For an hour in the dust on Monday night were all together on one vibe, in the same moment, part of the flow. Immediacy, connection, community, creativity, play, inclusion, all together.

Thanks to Syd, Connie, Dulce and all the OT team, you all create magic!! Thanks to all my friends and family who came out to dance, you melted my heart. And thanks to Lary Harvey for creating and evolving and keeping this ridiculous thing going all these years. May your soul be ever philosophizing and creating community in the cosmos.
