“Yiddishland Mix” is now available on Soundcloud. 

Yiddishland is “a mythical and real land that has never appeared on a map of the world, but whose frontiers have forged rivers, crossed oceans and spanned continents” (Silvain and Minczeles 1999). Yiddishists use the term “Yiddishland” to describe Yiddish culture, communities, and histories all wrapped up into one. The term’s insistence on an absence of borders also reflects the history of radical Yiddish folks as they resisted statist movements. 

I present here a mixture of anti-state and revolutionary Yiddish songs from the turn of the century, modern Yiddish songs that reflect on the queerness and borderlessness of Yiddish life today, and Yiddish songs from many sectors of Yiddish cultural expression. Many of these songs are sung by folks I know and love, some are older recordings of historic Yiddish singers. All are set to techno tracks from contemporary artists I admire.

Chaia is an electronic composer working at the intersection of Yiddish culture and electronic club music. She weaves archival Yiddish samples with techno and ambient frameworks, creating hybrid folkloric-electronic compositions that situate ancestral sound within global and liberatory rave ecologies.

"This mix is an hour-long meditation on YIDDISH RITUALS, from witchy incantations to bathing ceremonies by moonlight. I selected Yiddish folksongs and interviews from various archives describing rituals long gone or still practiced today. I combined these rituals with a meditative mix of glittery techno and house. Pairs best with dancing barefoot in the moonlight🌛"
