02 Bruca Manigua

this was “improvised”* way back in the first half of the 90’s 
when i was living in what i refer to as “the black studio” in 
culver city. black because it had previously been an actor’s
workshop/theater and was painted black in it’s entirety on 
one half, which was also raised bout 6 inches higher than
the other half. i lived in this space for 8 and 1/2 years. it had
no kitchen & no shower. i’d joined a gym a short drive away 
where i could both workout and shower. i got a lot of work 
done in this space, scoring low budget films and especially 
progressing the system i’d invented for improvising over changes
(or not) using small interval groups in combinations to create 
whatever harmony desired. this was in fact quite a step up from
my previous accommodations at the Roger Corman Studio in
Venice where i’d lived the 2 years B4 this place. at least it had 
a toilet and small b.r. sink! 
* it was improvised at first, then after the various sections had
become “codified” was sequenced. i didn’t think much about it
after that time as it wasn’t really representative of anything which
i was doing, but i recently ran across it on one of the hundreds of
DAT recordings made in this place, and it kind of “struck a chord”
w/in me, and i’ve found myself going back to it time and again, as 
it seems to hold a certain “sway” over me.
it never had a title, until just quite recently when i extrapolated one
from a phrase i heard on a video about “the great attractor” in our 
UNIVERSE.

This is our opening set tune, originally recorded in 1948 by a blind Cuban Tres guitar player named, Arsenio Rodriguez. We love this tune because it brings in elements of the traditional Cuban "son" as well as setting the tone for our variety of Latin danceable songs in our repertory
