evening project, 2014-08-21

started playing Kantai Collection very recently and thought this was a nice theme to listen to, so I thought I could transcribe/arrange something decent for piano in an evening.  

I wrote it to be fairly simple (by my standards anyway), though it's not like the piece itself is particularly busy in the first place.  I actually spent a bit of time trying to transcribe the parts as well and got fairly close... but to what end?

also, if anyone can actually tell me the name of the original track I'd be happy to rename this properly instead of just calling it 'menu theme'

so, I'm trying to push myself to do more music.  ever since I got back from China, I've been thinking more about life - you know, in that strange ambiguously serious kind of way that such a phrase entails.  I'm getting older, and sometimes when I look back, it's really hard to say that these past few years of my life really have anything noteworthy to show for them.

so while I'm still here, and while I still can, I'd like to try and do something substantial in/for the western Touhou scene; thus - at the very least, I'm pushing myself to write more music.  I do owe some people some game music for the very least, but there is more to it than that.  that might involve a solo album at some point.  or maybe more collaboration albums.  if we were to go in the hypothetical deep end, it would probably include figuring out a way to promote more Western/foreign doujin musicians somehow.    like, maybe building up Western conventions to match RTS and Comiket as a release event.  or maybe that involves something else that I haven't thought of yet.

anyway, onto the track.  I wasn't aware of many other orchestral covers of this song, so naturally that was a big incentive for me to do it.  moreover, this is one of those songs where the original track title really evokes a vivid image:  a sublime wilderness of untamed beauty, its denizens ranging from the expected and mundane to the brilliant and supernatural.  as such, my goals were to try and capture the essence of a magical journey to Gensokyo would be like - a miraculous odyssey filled with breathtaking sights, but fraught with peril.

this track's title is, once again, intentionally somewhat pretentious - once again, in an effort to boil down all of that word vomit into a few choice words.

on the technical side of things - I'm looking for a computer upgrade fairly soon, since I bought a few things earlier on in the year and have yet to use them due to various issues. since I happened to get it working, though, this is the first time I'm applying convolution reverb, albeit not without trouble.  imo, it's not that noticeable, but I didn't really like how things got when there was too much.  here's to hoping less is more.  (or idk maybe someone help me with installing the damn thing properly in the first place so the rest of my libraries don't somehow magically disappear fml)

I've been wanting to do a Yuyuko-related theme for a while now since she is basically my favorite Touhou character.  Originally this was going to be a short and sweet 2 minute rendition of Ultimate Truth, but in the process of writing Night Sakura of Dead Spirits demanded to be in, so I ended up scrapping my original plans for where this was going to go.  (It was such a lovely texture, too - maybe it'll show up again in the future in some other song.)

I'd like to dedicate this song to all of my friends in the Touhou community - especially those that I had a chance to hang out with in person at the DC Sakura Matsuri two months ago.  Thank you for your kindness and generosity in welcoming me as a friend, and for the inspiration you provided for arranging this song.

this song took an extra 2-3 days to finish because I was dumb and decided that I could loop the first 2 minutes and tweak it to be more interesting.  the results are... mixed.  the good: I think there's a couple of variations that I otherwise wouldn't have explored.  the bad: the melodic line is largely left to trumpet/f.horn/violins in a few specific sections, and they're very similar.  reasoning: there's a certain energy level I felt I needed to maintain, and trying to do that while also keeping things fresh was harder than expected.  maybe I should've just gone with the repeat and left it at 2 minutes.

but overall, I'm not displeased with this result.  turnaround time was pretty average for me; hoping to improve that over the next few weeks as redditaisai approaches.

Got tired of working on this so I just decided to release it as is.  Not terrible but needs some fine detail work in some spots.  Also doesn't help that I don't really like the Death Waltz meme but it was far easier just to base it off of the COOL&CREATE arrange.  Besides, I have something else I'm working on for complex time signatures.
