To participate:

- Make a song in response to the weekly assigned poem (a new poem is published every Wednesday)

- When choosing a title for your piece also include the assignment number, for example “Title of your track (naviarhaiku110)”

To submit your track:

- If you’re a Soundcloud user, upload it on Soundcloud and send me the URL via private message, or tag me in the track.

- If you upload your music on Youtube, Bandcamp or anywhere else, upload your submission and then send me the link by email at marco@naviarrecords.com or contact me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram

It’s not the first time we experiment with haiku and AI, but it’s always fun. ChalkWalk, a member of Naviar’s community and regular contributor to the Haiku challenge, created some haiku with the support of GPT-3, an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. This language prediction model was developed by OpenAI, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research laboratory.

Matsunaga Teitoku (1571-1654) was an early haikai poet and founder of the Teimon school of poetry, which aimed to make haikai accessible to a wide audience while striving to make it a respectable literary form. A task ultimately accomplished by Bashō.

There are four components here which represent elements in the haiku. A descending shepherd tone is the most melodic, a pad to add body, the sounds of the sea (literal vs figurative in the haiku) and sounds of bird song. The combination feels a little busier than I intended but they work reasonably nonetheless.
