Now & Forever started as a TikTok but I ended up loving it too much to doom it to that fate. It’s a remix/cover of a VIP remix of a song called Forever by one of my fav artists ever, Oklou. What a mouthful... She did a remix of her own song on her burner Soundcloud acct (@avril23) that I fell in love with. If a relationship were a movie, that song would play as the credits roll.

Also! the night I made that pluck out of my voice at 1:09, I went to bed thinking, “tonight, I am my own favorite producer.” I am so, so critical of myself so that was really special to me. I probably wasn’t still in the morning lol, but I’ll never forget that moment!

I started Just Sleep on Dec. 1st, 2019 (!!!) as a simple, guilty pleasure beat to submit for music school homework. A few weeks later, I was about to get on a flight home for Christmas when my then-gf of 6yrs called to break up w/ me. I can distinctly remember getting in to TX, going up to my childhood bedroom, crying, and dancing around my room like a lunatic to this beat. And that’s the role it continued to have for me over the next ~3yrs. Whenever I was in a pit, I would throw this one on and it would pull me out. 

That’s partly the reason it took so gd long to finish. I wanted to write something that reflected that - finding happiness in sadness! And it took almost that long to find the sentiment that felt right&real. That first moment of realization that you’ve been on the path to healing seemed like the perfect fit. Mine came in the form of something small, but it was important! :]

Tourniquet

First non-house release, I think. Tried to add a little intensity to a beautiful song. No official acapellas on the internet so I ripped an old, unofficial acapella that a user, Go Sari Go, made on Smule a couple years ago. After heavy processing and warping, the vocals fit. Really happy I got to put my spin on this track. Hope y'all enjoy.

Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks (Chamoun Remix)

This was the one of the quickest tracks I produced start to finish. I wanted this one to sound like it was played by a broken robot. All the rhythms are slightly off and the panning effect in the break sections came together to give the song a wonky, off-kilter feel. 

I hate making outros so this song also served as an exercise in that. I think it turned out really pretty and I like the Kanye-esque transition. 

Also definitely a transportation motif in this one. Starts and ends with train station/airport samples.

I really enjoyed making the synths in this one. The textures kind of took on a life of their own. The drop has sort of a lumbering giant feel to it.

I was aiming to make a track that sounded underwater. A lot of washed out reverbs and bubbly effects in this one. The track’s structure is also quite fluid. I joke that 2:17 is my "arena moment”. All the drums cut out and that haunting lead comes back in. That moment has a lot of power, in my opinion.

Atlantis

This was the first song I started making for the EP around halfway through my freshman year. It’s also the most stereotypically electronic song on the EP and I think it shows my departure from house as a genre. I sampled some old Louis Lane vocals in here (thanks to Mura Masa for that idea).

Lois Lane

This one came about when my girlfriend and I were stranded in Amarillo, TX with nowhere to stay during a road trip after our reservation plans had fallen through. We called several hotels but none had any vacancy last minute. It took us hours but we eventually found a Comfort Inn and managed to get a room. I wrote the majority of this track in that room after she had fallen asleep. 

Technically, this track was exciting for me because I challenged myself to make a song where all the sounds you hear have been reversed. I strayed from that target in the rest of the song but I’m proud to say that all the synth work in the drops is reversed audio. This is also the first track where my vocals are prominently featured.

Comfort

This is the track I am most proud of on the EP. It started out being over 5 minutes long and has gone through many phases. Over the course of production, I started hating most of the track. After weeks of fruitless tweaking, I threw in the towel and deleted everything but the drops. My second go at it got the inspiration flowing and I finished it that day. The lesson learned was that just because something has been where it is for so long does not mean it is set in stone.

Also a lot of interesting sound design in this one. I think 2:59 is the most intense thing I’ve ever made.

One of my quickest tracks start to finish that I've been sitting on for the longest time. Really happy with how it turned out.

This track was an experiment in contrasting bursts of intense volume with absolute silence. I often go into tracks thinking about how they would be played live and I always pictured this one being played at night with heavy strobing white light then dropping the crowd into absolute darkness. 

This is also my first time collaborating with a vocalist, which is super exciting. Olivia absolutely killed it, she's a fantastic writer with a really powerful voice and I'm lucky to have worked with her.

This song has been sitting in the vault for months but I thought I'd put it out to celebrate reaching 50k plays. It's one of my favorites that I've ever made because of how different I think it sounds from any other song out right now.
