Legendary label Champion Records celebrates the 25th anniversary of its classic house release Kristine W ‘Feel What You Want’ by enlisting the remix skills of Freejak, These Machines, King & Early, and Guz.

Released in 1994, the dark, hypnotic groove of Kristine W ‘Feel What You Want’ and Rollo’s sublime production made it an iconic house track which went to No.1 in the US Club Charts. 25 years’ later, Champion Records has given it a fresh lease of life.

Freejak’s mix is the perfect homage to the track he says turned him to house music when he heard the original on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show. After working with Kristine W on ‘Stars’, Freejak describes his mix as “a loving tribute to the original, by trying to keep true to the initial flavours by introducing modern production techniques."

These Machines aka Steve Mac delivers a scintillating remix of the track he “remembers like it was yesterday”. Having worked with Champion Records over 20 years ago under his Rhythm Masters alias, the celebrated producer gives the original a tougher, beefed up edge, whilst remaining close to the original.

House duo King & Early retain the original’s moody feel but move into deeper territory, adding atmospheric strings and layering the vocal. The end result is a “current, yet timeless sound”, guaranteed to produce goose-bumps.

Finally, Dutch house master Guz emphasises the hypnotic organ of the original whilst adding techier sounds, respecting the original which he also has fond memories of from hearing on the radio.
Early DJ and radio support for the Kristine W ‘Feel What You Want’ remixes includes from Danny Rampling, Graeme Park, Tough Love, ROOG, Melon Bomb, K-Klass, Tom Novy, Eric Morillo, Kryder, Après (KISS), and Majestic (KISS).

In 1985 Champion hired its first employee, an 18 year old named Paul Oakenfold who had been working as messenger boy in New York. Champion Records aimed at releasing underground club tunes, Hip Hop, Rare Grooves, Jazz & Soul tracks as well as uplifting House tunes on 12” vinyl originally found and licensed from the USA. Tunes like Spank ‘Oh Baby’, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince ‘Girls Ain’t Nothin’ But Trouble’, Salt ‘N Pepa ‘Push it’ & Rene & Angela ‘Secret Rendezvous’.

As musical taste evolved Champion aligned itself with the early house and garage movement. It produced iconic tracks including Raze’s ‘Break 4 Love’, Robin S ‘Show Me Love’, Sandy B ‘Make The World Go Round’, Kristine W ‘Feel What You Want’ & Sybil ‘Don’t Make me Over’. These then turned into some of the most famous & credible artists in the world along with DJ’s like Todd Terry, Kerri Chandler, Junior Vasquez and Stonebridge.
