My rediscovered love of percussion and rhythms from my own South Asian heritage, was very much sparked by that of the innovators doing so from the SWANA region over the last decade.  I had the honour of bringing these together for LUMA, freshly inspired by the Daytimers X Middle Of Nowhere Day/Night Party at Colour Factory in July 2022, where I shared a lineup with said innovators. 

Resulting in 30 minutes of hybrid, belly busting, head spinning and unravelling percussion, charting sonic alliances even futher across the Global South and Black Atlantic. Assembled together as an attempt to envision a blueprint for interracial coalition of solidarity through rhythm and bang the drum against ethno-nationalism.

The Daytimers Podcast returns with an exclusive interview with none other than Manara! This episode has strong language.

Provhat & Chandé spoke to the prolific DJ & Broadcaster, living legend and one true queen of the spiciest blends all the way back in the midst of winter 2020, which our esteemed interviewee attests was “two Manara’s ago”. 

Even still, the Manara we spoke too back then, for their FIRST EVER in depth interview to date, had already garnered vast acclaim as a DJ that has toured clubs and festivals around the world, had residencies on Rinse FM and NTS plus standout appearances on Boiler Room that has every single one of your favourite DJs and Producers tweeting their devotion to her majesty on the decks.

It’s safe to say that she has helped open up the music industry's eyes to South Asian contemporary club sounds. For us she has welcomed us into a space that has inspired many to look back to our childhood with new joy. Creating spaces with her Cousins parties, in arms with others from the South Asian Diaspora but also alongside it and of course the Ultimate Spice Blends compilation and her Pure Spice residency on BBC Asian Network.

Fitting in with her enthralling DJ sets and the chaotic energy she professes an affinity to, this conversation goes everywhere. Insights to Manara's journey into music whilst navigating family and faith, discovering her approach to creativity as a DJ and Producer, and achieving those milestones that have paved the way for others. Don't Be Afraid With iona and Chandé - 14 August 2023

DOGTOOTH is an album reclaiming the black African macabre as a utopian space, where pain, joy, paranoia and pleasure can be explored with equal and seamless ferocity. This album is a brother’s Grimm style collection of vignettes set in this world, starring Nigerian musician and filmmaker LINTD, as the titular creature DOGTOOTH. An impossible creature of paranoia, lust and anxiety, who must overcome its very nature to survive.

This work is act 2 of LINTD’s The Black Impossible, a collaboration with Sheffield born producer Porter Brook, where the 2 explore the extremities of black sound as utopian technology. When asked about this project LINTD expands, saying “ the work exists as 3 distinct acts of music, representing the black utopias that manifest on the sonic extremes of our current anti-black reality. In order, they are Act 1 SMOOCH Soundsystem, Act 2 Dogtooth, Act 3 Funeral Rites on Planet Saturn. They are speculative interpretations of real life black underground realities springing utopian, innovative life into western society without the much-needed support or even credit they need to sustain themselves.” LINTD extends the black macabre in DOGTOOTH as a place for the validation of black anxiety with lessons of solitude and the power of God and love.

LINTD adds when questioned about the title, “it is about a character who eats dog teeth for lunch. Something about that image haunted me, there is little or no nutritional value to dogs, and he doesn’t even eat the meant, yet he persists out of pure pleasure. It is sickening and that experience is how paranoia feels. Sharp but also somehow slippery, a warning and a curse. The extreme of what it can feel like to navigate the paranoia of white society as n African migrant. Nauseating but also I’m hoping, kinda cute.”
