A beautifully warm, diverse and wiggly mix from Oakland, California based Wonja (@wonj). Alongside being a talented dj & avid record collector, Wonja makes up one half of Motoko & Myers with her partner Dan. 

I'm constantly impressed by the wide-spanning range of genres, styles and moods that make up Wonja's mix catalogue - always new and always fresh.  For this mix, she's put together a playful and eclectic mix of glitch, groove and interesting soundscapes.

Animix Seventy One: Wonja

Drasii is a hardware-based electronic music duo formed by multi-disciplinary artists Chris Kalis and Lisa Armstrong. Formed as an off-shoot of Chicago-based electronic ensemble Chandeliers, the duo has been performing live, DJing, and self-releasing music as Drasii on their imprint Shmee Records since late 2021. For their Moments In Love mix, the duo pulls from their years of experience performing underground electronic music and producing and hosting the weekly electronic music show Chando Radio (@chandeliers) on WLPN-LP Chicago Lumpen Radio with fellow Chandeliers member Scott McGaughey. Chris and Lisa split track selection duties equally, then began working out different sequences and edits with a final cut completed by Chris. The resulting mix demonstrates an expert sense of narrative flow, building and releasing tension as it shifts through the many sounds under the Balearic/cosmic umbrella while slowly increasing the tempo over its 80 minutes.

Chris and Lisa have begun releasing music under the Drasii moniker this year with their debut "MEMORY Δ" followed by their latest single "Voyager" released this month on their Bandcamp page: https://drasii.bandcamp.com/

Chris currently lives in Chicago and teaches at DePaul University, he also co-hosts a monthly residency at Life on Marz Community Club in Bucktown called SENDERS that broadcasts live to Lumpen Radio. Lisa currently lives in Los Angeles and teaches at CalArts and has another radio show called Full Bleed on moonglow.fm.

Moments In Love #9-Drasii

For the 10th entry in our mix series we have received a new transmission from academic, world adventurer, and king of the wrong-speed record Joe Greenbaum. I first met Joe at a Chicago underground party, and got to know him while he was working at Gramaphone Records. For about 2 years I got to witness Joe work his turntable magic weekly at WNUR. His radio show saw him flexing his eclectic taste and adventurous use of time-stretching to blend tracks together, often pitching records up or down 50% or more. On many occasions the tracks he would play would actually be Trance. Gabber, or Drum n bass records morphed beyond recognition. For his Moments mix, Joe starts us off with a pitched sound collage that slowly morphs into a drug chug beat, gradually moving into italo and disco, before closing us out with slowed down acid-trance.

It’s a real honour to share this podcast with you, created by Neuropolitique (Matt Cogger) for Irdial Discs' Monster Music radio shows in 1992. I had this mix on cassette and have lovingly held onto it ever since. To think that it’s 21 years since this was first broadcast - and the music on here still floors me. 
Irdial Discs were a huge inspiration to me and i know many others who felt the same. They played by their own rules, followed no one and forged a path that left me speechless. If you want to know how to run a “real” record label then go and investigate just what they achieved, from records to books, software to radio shows. There was an attitude too that is so lacking these days, statements of intent. “In Your Hearts Not The Charts...”....”We Suffer To Bring You Beautiful Music..”..
When I read this, it felt like a call to arms and I knew whose banner I wanted to stand by. I always said to myself if we can get to be a tenth as good as them then I would be happy.

Back in 1992 when a pint of lager would have cost you £1.44, Akin Fernandez asked me to put together a 'mixtape' in the Saturday Night Jam style of such radio stations as WBMX and WJLB.
Having already made one a couple of years previously (unfortunately not broadcast due to the inclusion of a certain Sensuous Black Woman Goes Disco) I jumped at the chance. 
Akin set me up one afternoon in his King's Road studio with a rather nice reel-to-reel recorder, a top collection of vinyl and I seem to remember a marijuana dispensation for the room.
