Tomorrow is Hippopotamus Day!

No, I haven't lost my mind. The Greek name for Feb.. 2's feast is "Hypapante," which means "Meeting." When we were in seminary, my friend Andriy Partykevich used to call it "Hippopotamus," which sorta stuck in my memory. In the West, it has three names: the current official name (Presentation of the Lord in the Temple), the former official name (the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and the popular nickname (Candlemas).

Today's sound file is the Latin motet "Senex puerum portabat." This was the Antiphon on the Magnificat at First Vespers in the pre-Vatican II Divine Office. It holds the same place in the current Liturgy of the Hours, but is now only sung when February 2 falls on a Sunday. The setting is by Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548-1611). It was recorded by the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's in the Loop on the audio cassette, "Music for the Feasts of Light" in 1990.

Today's sound file is taken from the "Five Mystical Songs," poems by the Anglican priest-poet George Herbert (3 April 1593 – 1 March 1633) set by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (12 October 1872 – 26 August 1958) This was recorded live in a concert entitled "Entertaining Angels Unaware" performed at St. Peter's in the Loop in Chicago in 1998 by the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's in the Loop and a chamber orchestra.  The conductor of the Five Mystical Songs in that concert was the assistant conductor of the Schola, Bart Bradfield, and the baritone soloist was Dr.  Bruce Cain.
