With so many artists in music spending endless amounts of energy creating an image of themselves that is not even close to who they really are, it is refreshing to find an artist who still believes in the honesty of music. Chan-T is an RnB artist that still believes that music is suppose to connect us emotionally. That’s what he does with his music. The Ballad Unlove asked the question that any of us who have been through heartbreak has asked. Can someone please remove the love I have for this person from my heart? “Music is therapy. Heartbreak songs do well when the songwriter pens the song from their own experience. A heartbreak song written by someone who never experienced it will not work because they would not know the right words to describe the emotion or the moment.”

Born and raised in Darlington, South Carolina music has always been a part of his life. He would hone his skills alone not wanting anyone to hear him sing until one day he revealed his closely guarded secret to his best friend. “Derrick and I use to walk home from the projects at night and he would get me to sing certain songs while we were walking just goofing off.” Until one day after school when he was 15 Derrick decided it was time for the world to know his friend could sing. “He gathered about 20 girls around and shouted I know the real Johnny Gill! I was like ahh man no! They were like who? He said my hommie Chan. They were like what? Chan can’t sing. So he was like go ahead and show them I was like no man but girls were like please let’s hear it. So I sung the first verse of Can You Stand The Rain and the girls went crazy. That’s when I knew I was ready”.

While performing in groups he formed in High School, he caught the attention of his music mentor Howard Jeffery. “Howard taught me a lot about being a well rounded artist.” After graduation he decided to move to Atlanta to pursue a career in music. There he linked up with Howard who had already moved there and they began to work on a demo. While working on material Anthony Muldrow, whom he performed in his high school group with, moved to Atlanta. They formed the duo La’Tone. They recorded a three song Demo. Symbol, Funk Ride and All I Had. Symbol, written by Howard Jeffery garnered enough attention that they performed it on a Valentine’s Day show on T.V. Other songs followed and the two began to gain momentum.

Just as the Duo began to garner attention, Chan-T made the decision to leave the Duo to focus on family. During this time, though he was not active in his pursuit, he was never far from music. “I experienced a lot of trying times. The only therapy I had was music. It was then I made the decision to never write anything that’s wasn’t in my soul because that’s where the honesty lies. That’s when I truly became a songwriter.” That is evident in the songs that he creates. Be it his mixtape “The Cover Letters”, or his debut album” Love and Other Drugs” you can hear and feel the emotion behind the songs. “My influences are artist that are singer songwriters such as Prince, R Kelly, Babyface, Bill Withers, Lyfe Jennings and someone that surprises a lot of people, Joe Budden.” This artist is a breath of fresh air to the Industry. Welcome back to the era of honest music.
