bela (they/them) is a South Korean musician/DJ and a performance artist splitting their time between Berlin and Prague. As a DJ, bela opts for system music on a deeper and heavier rhythmic quest. They started appearing in the Seoul scene back in 2017, debuting at the one and only Cakeshop. Since then, they have played at clubs like Tresor, Säule, ALL Shanghai, and Planeta Za. Away from the DJ history, bela is known for their live performance in queer voice and ritual of grief, growling and screaming to Korean traditional rhythms across numerous festivals: Unsound Kraków, Dripping NY, Rewire, and Le Guess Who? etc. Their most recent LP “Noise and Cries” was released on Subtext and Unsound in 2024.

"Following the beats alone can be a journey of true learning. Today I am channeling somewhere between steppers in the UK and OHM in Berlin, where the lesson comes from the 140s, dubstep, grime, half-step, garage, bass experiments between UK and Germany. I am gathering all kinds of splits to compensate for sucking at rhythm games - and then, I am floating into the triplets, inevitably drifting away into the ever-addictive Monterreian prehispanica wormhole."

"I’ve been friends with Joe since we were kids. He is a profound silence filler," writes freelance writer Emile Frankel of his friend Other Joe (aka @josephbuchan) in our upcoming feature article.

'Flawless' is Joe's latest record, regularly toying with the space between ambience, very comfortably proving the artist's ability to leave room for the listener to hear their own breath. 

'Deepblue', co-produced with fellow etherealist @ronan-music, is the penultimate track on Joe’s new record, ‘Flawless’. 

A touching, soft, and yet calmly loud dance. Crunchy, uncompressed drums and ever twinkling pads twist around the echo of an Amen break. NY’s Ronan and Naarm’s Joe link up in the haze to produce something unique. 

'Deepblue' is a taste of everything available on Other Joe’s latest record, becoming available and possible from the inimitable @besteffort. 

'Flawless' is available as a limited run of 150 vinyl via Best Effort’s Bandcamp, and via all streaming platforms on Sunday, June 1.

@three-mothers is a Naarm/Melbourne-based musician dedicated to the intersection between experimental electronic music and pop. 

'Three Mothers' is the artist's self-titled debut album, which is in her own words "a manic love letter to everyone you've ever been. A glassy and fragile veneer over staggering percussion, Three Mothers is a vibrant and glossy sheen smudged over a grief-filled abscess." 

'Belladonna', the album's second of a massive 14 tracks, is a fast-paced, drum-filled dive into everything that the album offers. In her practice, Three Mothers works with an array of materials, samples, hardware and software, a process clearly all on show here.

As the name suggests, 'Belladonna' is about a beautiful woman, a term often used to describe someone as being 'cosmetic'. For Three Mothers, this choice and a series of others on the album comment on her position as a trans woman on the internet, sex work, objectification, desire and passion.

Across its run-time, 'Belladonna' is but only a taste of everything to find on this debut.

Three Mothers' debut album releases with a launch party at Naarm venue Miscellania on July 25.
