After a long hiatus posting anything, I motived to put together another selection I’ve longed to do for years. This is part one of two presenting Winston Rodney aka Burning Spear’s 1970’s singles for just Jack Ruby and himself. The earliest tune in these two parts is from 1974 when he broke into the big time in a big way with ‘Marcus Garvey’, which took the island by storm. From there, he continued on from his glorious period with Studio One (that era not included here, maybe for another day) but utilizing more updated studio sounds and mixing of the time. Not a duff track to be found here, presented vocal and dub, along with two complimentary Big Youth and Big Joe tunes. One outlier in part one is a song named ‘See Dem Da’ which came on the Jah Marcus Roots imprint and bore Spear’s name though sung by his then-brother in harmony, Rupert Wellington. Looks like it’s arranged by Phillip Fulwood, another one of Spear’s spars at the time. But you can clearly hear Mr. Rodney’s backing vocals here, so decided to include it as it’s not one I see getting bandied about often. Simple little tune, but effective. Another anomaly contained herein…the People Get Ready 45 vocal is inferior to the album cut, which is an all-time favorite, so I used the album cut here together with the 45 dub side. 

Regardless of the details, this is top flight classic era roots. Roll it….
