A Love Song

Written in February 2014.

The piece was commissioned by the Royal Conservatory of Ghent on the occasion of 500 years from Andreas Vesalius Bruxellensis's birth; it was performed during the Week of Contemporary Music, which I was curating, by G.A.M.E. (Ghent Advanced Masters Ensemble) under the bâton of Daan Jaansens.

Vaesanus (= madman in Latin) was how people called Vesalius in the 16th century for his blasphemous delving into the human body. Accordingly, a slowly evolving music is twice interrupted by an "all fools' intermezzo" (announced by a gong) demonstrating a shattering of all earnestness.
Vesalius's stand against intolerance and obscurantism stays always in season...

Skostok (Σχοστόκης) is the name of an ancient king of the Odrysians. We know he existed only from a few brass coins with laureate Apollo and an equestrian with the inscription 'ΣΚΟΣΤΟΚ'.
Initially written for Nieuw Ensemble, this is the reworked version for TETTTIΞ ensemble, performed in Onassis Stegi in 2018.

"He composed the Havasí for flute and ensemble having on his mind the sound of the zourna and the kaval, with the attitude to transmute the music of his homeland. Havá in turkish literally means "air", but in music is used to mean "tune". Nowadays, concerning the traditional music of Greece, the term still exists mainly in Serres' region (Northern Greece) in the repertoire of zourna.  It is always accompanied by the title of the tune and it is followed by -si , i.e. Monastír havasí, that means the tune of monastery. Seen from this perspective, the Havasí is an instrumental dance tune of a Macedonian "post-community".

Havasí

For positive organ, one player and four tuners.
The poetry of frequency beating. An almost electronic sound, produced only from the baroque, positive - also known as portative or chest - organ, used mostly for basso continuo. Patterns and alterations of beatings in unison, in chords or in clusters, in multiple layers.

Recorded live in the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague, during the concerts of the Spring Festival 2013. The organ used is a Klop in 440Hz, with 3 registers and split keyboard.
