After spending a few weeks listening to Jim Croce, I felt inspired to try my hand at writing a folk song. It really hit me just how much talent we lost with him, and how much the music scene has changed since. This song is far from perfect, but it was a lot of fun to create. And, by the way, there was no Mary – but then again, I’m not sure there was ever a Leroy Brown either.

The Dance

I grew up in an ethnically diverse neighborhood in the Bronx, NYC, during a period of intense racial tension. Just getting through the day at school was a struggle. I picked up the guitar as a way to stay off the streets, and I found that music was the only thing that could transcend those barriers.  My song “Living on the Wrong Side of Town” is inspired by those early experiences.

When I tried pursuing a degree in music, I ended up switching to computer science instead. I didn’t have the confidence or self-esteem back then, and, to be honest, I didn’t want to struggle. I reflect on those decisions in my song “Making Choices.”

Many years have passed, and I’ve done well for myself. But music has always been a constant, helping me navigate through the hardest times. The difference now is that I have more life to draw from, more stories to tell.

When you write a song and truly connect to it, it becomes a piece of who you are—a reflection of your journey.
