Starting with the percussion and wind-instruments driven Afro-Colombian sound of Gloria Perea, from Chocó on the Pacific Region of Colombia, expanding to Perú where a distinctly Amazonian style of Cumbia emerged in the early 1970s with Ranil—Los Ecos bringing another local style called: Guaracha. Pop duo from Colombia formed by sisters Fleta bring us ‘Alegría’ meaning ‘Happiness’ (and it is full of joy this one!) from 1973. A cover (and getting a little heavier) from 1978 of Stayin' Alive’ by The Bee Gees performed by Machuca Cumbia. Of course stopping in Puerto Rico: the no-where-to-be-found on digital (maybe on YouTube) :‘Piccadilly’ by Fania All Stars from 1976. Tito On Timbales by Tito Puente from 1956: this is the sweetest expression of Tito Puentes mastery on timpani! El Gran Combo and Ismael Miranda representing the influence of the country in this era also. ‘El Preso’ and ‘Improvisando’, songs that always make it to my record trolley. Both by the legendary Fruko y Sus Tesos. ‘Latin Parang’ by Colleen Grant from Barbados and a surfie cover of ‘El Ratón’ by Cheo Feliciano performed by Los Invasores from Panamá.
