Christmastime, Copenhagen, 1996.
The weather’s been shit for weeks, everybody’s sick.
Rain freezin’ on the window, but this car is way too hot.
This train sounds like pneumonia, wheezin’ from stop to stop.
To another station up ahead, with another name I can’t pronounce
I just count the times we stop so I know just when to get out,
into a freezin’ rain that steals my heart and chills me to the bone,
I woulda stopped to call you, but I can’t figure out the phones

Tonight I wish this train rain all the way to Texas,
and made a stop in Tennessee.
On a downtown station where a little green-eyed girl is, 
waitin’ on the platform just for me.
’til it steals your heart, you’ll never know just what cold is,

Nørreport to Nyhavn, it’s 22 city blocks,
I can’t afford a taxi, so I guess I’ll have to walk.
Every door holds a troubadour, his case open at his feet,

’til it gets so goddamn cold it don’t matter anyway

One last round of Christmas cheer, time to catch the midnight train,
22 city blocks back uptown through the snow and freezin’ rain.
I saw a lady on the smoking car in her bright red Christmas dress,
her head slumped against the window, she had a long night too, I guess
I recall that I first saw her when we both were comin’ in,
before the promise of the season had let us down again.
When she was gettin’ dress tonight, she never dreamed she would explain,
that the only man who brought her home was some stranger on the train.

beyond Castle beach 
and the walking bare feet on those sandy streets

just to take a drive to the ...
