This fast paced piece captures life in a metropolitan city: modern, hectic, noisy, never standing still. The use of extended techniques aims to conjure up the varied city sounds, while the sing and play technique represents the man-made, densely populated environment.

Urban

This piece strives to capture an empty landscape with nothing for miles around, like the arctic tundra or a desert. Use of space, wind tones, and residual tones, along with more unusual sounds of timbral trills help to set the scene of the cold, empty, eerie landscape.

Composed between 2021 and 2024, Contemplations is a collection of three pieces which explore the idea of solitude, whether feeling isolated and yearning for a meaningful connection, or tuning into yourself and finding peace and enjoyment in your own company.
The human voice represents our truest feelings, those which are often suppressed by the noise of daily life. Using the pianist’s voice draws attention to this important part of ourselves and serves as a reminder of the delicacy of the human experience.

First performed by Fidan Aghayeva-Edler at St Elisabeth Kirche, Berlin, Germany, 18th May 2025, as part of the 24 hour piano marathon. The audio selections are taken from this performance.
