Charly Hustle's HallowEEEEE Mix

This is a lil something that I have been messing around for a while now. I was always playing this acapella over loops of other songs, and I decided to just go ahead and make a whole new instrumental.

This song was majorly inspired by these people...1) Adam Doubleyou. His awesome Thre3style set used the Julie McKnight acapella to great effect, and got the ball rolling. 2) Fingerman. The percussive elements of his fantastic edit of Quando Quango's Love Tempo (shout out Smalltown Romeo!) has always been a favorite of mine and it gave me inspiration for some of the congas/percussion in my tune. 3) TNGHT. Without Hudson Mohawke and Lunice's CRAZY tune Higher Ground...my tune never happens. 4) The fine gents and ladies that listened and gave me tips in the earlier stages of making this one...CHEERS!

Home (Charly Hustle Higher Bootleg EDIT) - Julie McKnight

While working on my section for the upcoming Bicycle Breaks 3 (!!!) for my hommie, Nick Bike...I stumbled upon this infectious number by a group named Kocky. It was featured on a Joey Negro compilation, and not only did it work perfectly for the section of my mix, but I found that I couldn't get the darn thing out of my head. Here's my little blend/edit/reworking/whatever of the song...with some added elements to keep it bumping. I've always LOVED Ultramagnetic MCs, and I just kind of giggle as I listen to the amazing Poppa Large acapella that I usually associate with a super-funky and menacing beat, instead over top of this bouncy and fun number. It's fun and fairly elemental: 1 catchy disco/funk tune + 1 DOPE Kool Keith acapella + 1 percussive drum sample (Phenomena Theme...also to be used on my upcoming Hustle & Thrive album)= 1 party.

Just Keep On Dancing (Charly Hustle Poppa Large EDIT) - Kocky

I have loved this song since the very first time I heard it. Chris Eyes-sack has a voice that is basically an angel that has smoked for years and has seen some things go DOWN. This song probably never needed a slightly danceable vaguely tropical type mix...but well, here we are. Hope you enjoy!

Wicked Game (Charly Hustle Island Mix)

Yup...yet ANOTHER Bees-Tee Boyz remix/edit/bootleg. These dudes have been a HUGE inspiration for me...I ain't apologizin' for nothin'. 

Here's a tune that started out COMPLETELY different...inspired by the Rolling Stone piece (taken from the book, For Whom the Cowbell Tolls) about the "great lost single" from the Paul's Boutique sessions. It's working title was "The Jerry Lewis" and sampled a tune called "Baby, Scratch My Back" by Dino, Desi and Billy (yes, Dean Martin's son, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball's son and a guy named Billy). I originally started out trying to make a beat out of that song, but it just wasn't working for me...it was frustrating. I worked for a LONG time trying to make it work, and realized that the thing that was holding the song back was the actual SAMPLE that I was trying to use. I simply took out the sample and the drums, percussion, vocals and everything else were sounding great! I went and scoured my record and computer library for a suitable sample, and after not TOO long of a search I found Jim Ford's "I'm Gonna Make Her Love Me". I had first heard it on Light In The Attic's AWESOME compilation, Country Funk album. TUNES for days, people (Tony Joe White's "Stud Spider" is one of the BEST things you'll hear).

Root Down (Charly Hustle Country FUNK MIX)

I remember my Pops and Step-mom did the ole "dial the hidden cell phone in the wrapped-up box" one Christmas. It was the very first flip phone...that GIANT Motorola grey brick that took two hands to hold up to your ear. The look on their faces when I opened it was one of my favorite gift-receiving moments ever. I maybe made 5 or 6 calls on it, but I've used it innumerable times as a prop. 

This here edit/bootleg is of "Name & Number" by Curiosity Killed The Cat...with the familiar refrain "Hey, how ya dooooin..." that was the basis of De La Soul's JAM, "Ring, Ring, Ring (Ha Ha Hey)". Add in some Chromeo, Biggie and Consequence and we've got ourselves a fine mess of references to phones and answering machines (the hell are THOSE?!).
