Sometimes I dream of being chased by a grizzly bear

Fraser Plateau (An Escape From Serene Women and Other Dangerous Creatures)

You are walking through a wheat field, passing your hands along the crops when suddenly struck down by some invisible, immeasurable force. Held down by a gripping paralysis your resistance fades. You stare up at the vivid blue and white sky and stare dumbfounded at the sight you behold. Lurid grey and black ink stains are swirling and cavorting around each other eastwards as if God himself has set to atmospheric oil painting. You watch fearfully at first, then curiously, as great shapes appear among the dark mass. You begin to rise from the ground, still stretched out flat, and soon reach the surface. Like Michaelangelo you raise your hands and scar this now earth-encompassing ceiling with scenes of forests and raging oceans, wildlife and civilisations. You move around, marking every inch of ink and are finally lowered back to the field. As your feet hit the ground you wake in bed, fingertips coated black.

The very next day a stranger appeared in Hamelin. He was different to everyone else. His clothes were colourful and seemed to come from many different places. He wore a hat covered with feathers and shells and bones. From a long scarf hung a silver pipe.
