Yes, you interpreted that title correctly. This is indeed the end. After three years and 30 mixtapes I decided to end this project for a variety of reasons. Mainly, because I feel like it has run its natural course and I think I want to move on. It’s a good moment to call it a day here but I’m making sure to go out with a bang.

I’ve been thinking about the concept of “the end” for a bit, since right now feels like it’s a very prominent theme in my life, on a personal and global level. I ended a longtime relationship this year, I think I finally accepted the end of my 40s and my “youth”... But this also feels like the end of other things. The end of the year? The end of liberal democracy? The end of sanity? I can’t tell you but I wanted to give this all a decent farewell with a 2hrs set that is all about ending but also new beginnings. 

My initial idea was indeed based on the apocalyptic scenario of an asteroid hitting the planet and making a decent end to all that nonsense. So, it gets a bit melodramatic and nihilistic in the first hour. You’ll definitely notice the moment of the meteor’s impact ‘cause things will get a bit loud then… after that the mood shifts a bit. Because there’s no such thing as a definite end because it usually only leads to a new beginning. So the town softens a bit towards hopeful sentimentality. It’s probably about accepting that change, overcoming grief and facing whatever happens next.

After all, I didn’t want to end my Messy Mix series on a sad note because despite all those big changes, you can’t deny the fact that life simply goes on. There’s no meteor in sight, so it’s upon us to write the next chapter of our lives and this planet. I’m curious to find out what that might look like.

The past three years of curating the Messy Mix series have been a tremendous joy for me as a music selector. I’m so happy that so many beloved artists joined me for this different approach of enjoying music and telling a story through this art form. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.

And what follows the end? Well, something different definitely. My love for the mix as a form of compiling music won’t go away anytime soon, so this is most likely not the last you’ll hear from me in that form. Messy Mix 30 | The Messy End

Some things just take their time. And in an accelerated world like ours, this isn’t the worst approach you can take. When I started my little Messy Mix project three years ago, @will_samson was actually the first person I approached for a contribution. But well, then life happened and although it changed quite a bit for the both of us during that time, I’m happy that we’re now getting a full-circle-moment with Mr. Samson in the form of a truly beautiful musical journey that is his very own Messy Mix.

With his “Sounds Of The Earth” set the acclaimed songwriter and ambient composer created something that’s close to his own music - full of textures, exciting little twists and a raw unfiltered spirit that’s been fascinating me about his releases for more than a decade now. “I thought a lot about what theme to focus on for this mix and I kept returning to the idea of organic sounds,” Samson describes the mix: “Whether it is folk, electronic or something else, the music I'm always most drawn to has a warm, earth-like quality.” 

For the songwriter who has resided in Portugal in recent years this approach is not just about using the actual sounds of nature: “From analogue recording to sampling or the simple use of acoustic instruments, there are many ways that these audio characteristics present themselves.” And within this hour you’re getting all of it in a very satisfying way.

“Sounds Of The Earth” is a mix like a scuba dive, one that invites you all to let yourself fall into these immersive organic sounds in order to feel connected to the earth and perhaps maybe even escaping the digital chaos for a moment. At least that’s the wish of Will Samson and it’s also mine. Needless to say, I’m thrilled to finally have him on board for this beautiful Messy Mix. Since 2020, he has released music on some of the most respected labels in the electronic scene: Kompakt, Mobilee, Exploited, Permanent Vacation, Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder, and an album on John Digweed's Bedrock Records, with consistent support from top DJ's around the world.

As a true electronic music lover, he has collaborated with some electro icons (Dave Clarke, Arnaud Rebotini, Chicks on Speed, The Advent, Keith Tucker from AUX88...), adding an extra vocal dimension to his music.

After a career milestone in 2023 with a full album called "The Super Album" on the legendary label KOMPAKT Records, he's coming with a new album called "LUZ" on beloved Berlin's label MOBILEE.
