Soul Trader continue to come up with the goods. Their string of recent releases has seen the West London-based label drop some heavy, deep beats on their fans and new listeners alike. Now on to their 15th release, DJ Surplus’ imprint presents the Molly EP from Data 3.

Data 3’s twisted, rolling music has previously seen the light of day on Skanknbass, Most Addictive, Soulvent and GTA Records, and support has been swift from both Radio 1 and 1Xtra. The quality of their music, as evidenced on the new EP, allows them to fit seamlessly into the vision and ethos of a label like Soul Trader. 

The title track floats into view, raising on a bed of emotional piano and some ticking intro beats. Electronic noises breathe their way in, before a vocal sample gets repeated. All this builds up slowly into an almighty drop, where the bass comes to the fore and establishes itself well. Things grind along on a level, with the producers dropping in sounds and melodies to create a sweeping, multi-layered tune with both feeling and power. They don’t forget the core elements of some heavy drums and well-worked low end, which are there in abundance. Let Molly take you away, far into the distance, far into the future.

Two of Hospital Record’s most electrifying artists have formed an allegiance for a true coming together of titans. Bournemouth’s Krakota and Sao Paulo’s Urbandawn have combined their production talents to create the five-track ‘Focus Shift’ EP – a real drum & bass mash up of styles and sonic sequences.

The aptly named ‘Coyote’ is an absolute howler, unashamedly powerful and loaded with energy, distorting and plunging itself into new streams of audio chaos throughout.

‘Laguna’ fits with their alter-egos – sweet, pensive and majestic. Operating within a more classic Hospital framework, this rolling stroke of musical bliss will leave no party unsatisfied.

Sitting in the middle of this concerted creation is title track ‘Focus Shift’. Informed by both liquid-funk and tech styles, it’s gelled together with scathing bass riffs and high profile percussive chops.

‘Epigram’ has all the bassweight you’d expect from such a monolith collision of production powerhouses. Crisp and sinful, with a consistently militant atmosphere this song is pure depth, darkness and danger; with a genuinely intriguing sonic progression that renders this track as devastating as weapons grade plutonium.

Seeing the release home is ‘Paladin’. An ardent dancefloor destroyer that fuses the power of the stepper with the groove of a roller, that even angels would find themselves bustin’ a skank. Uplifting and powerful with cosmic subtleties in the low end twinned with sombre melodies and skittering drum-work all tempered in unison to create a certified banger.

Described by Mixmag as “in a league of his own,” it’s undeniable that John B knows how to stand out from the crowd. With an eighties-influenced aesthetic of shocked silver hair, bright makeup and eyeliner and an attitude packed with the sheer exuberance of modern club culture, John B is a world apart from your overly edgy, run-of-the-mill, black t-shirt types. 

This identity filters through into his music and you’ll know a John B tune when you hear one: playful but serious, full of energy yet still more sophisticated than most. His ability to balance a wide array of sounds, styles and influences is perhaps his defining ability as a musician – an ability that’s encapsulated on his forthcoming “TIMELINES” anthology album project. 

Red Sky, Starburst and recent banger Approaching Zero are just a few of the many tracks that are being remastered and revitalised for Timelines, a two-part, digital only retrospection on John B’s greatest hits. It’s a milestone for John, a celebration of a decades-spanning career that’s seen his name spread across charts and billboards around the world.  As well as some of his best-known music, John is also reaching deep into the vaults to master and release a slew of his own never-before-heard gems from 1995 to the mid 2000s – undeniably one of the greatest periods in the genre’s history. With these two sections split over the two parts, Timelines covers almost twenty years of John’s creative history and it does so with all the style and wit that we’ve come to expect. To best hear that history, keep an eye out for his exclusive Timelines sets, which will involve him digging deep into the Headz Blue Note-era archives and reaching for some serious classics, as well as some Timelines themed editions of his famed podcast. 

It’s part of a retrospective tip currently characterising John and Beta Recordings but also the scene more broadly, demonstrated well by his contribution to Spearhead’s celebration of their 100th release, as well as the upcoming remixes of ‘Up All Night’ as part of the 25 Years of Metalheadz celebrations. With several other releases in the works, including a remix for coldwave legends ‘the KVB’, a 2 track collaboration with Digital on long-time haunt Metalheadz, new singles on Beta, newly built studio a new AV project John B’s music schedule is almost as packed as his DJ calendar. 

Having recently hit Russia, Germany, the United States, Canada, and Let It Roll, John B is bringing his focused yet eclectic musical selections to an ever-increasing global D&B audience. For those unable to make it to a live set, John’s got a mammoth two-hour Timelines studio mix in the works which will showcase his modern approach to spinning the classics, as well as some never-heard, salvaged mixes from the late 1990s.
