For those who consider them regulars in the electronic music club scene in London or have lived here at any point in the last eight years, there is a remarkably high chance you've attended a night put on by, or in someway associated with, Casper Clark. In the last year alone he has managed to sort special eight hour back-to-backs from Morphosis and Ben UFO as well bringing a host of names such as Laurel Halo, Demdike Stare and Objekt to play at his night BleeD. His incredibly forward-thinking approach to music has led him to curate lineups for festivals such as Field Day, Beacons and Donau and he's become a go-to DJ for many other likeminded promoters and DJs. Earlier this year he added producer to his list of talents, doubling up BleeD as a label and releasing his debut Charlatan EP under Volte-Face, whilst also doing official remixes for Daniel Avery. Ahead of two big shows at Berghain and Fabric in the next month, we decided to catch up with Volte-Face for a little chat about London life and all things BleeD, as well getting him to mix our 123rd Truancy Volume. Describing the mix as a representation of what he likes to play in the clubs at the minute, the mix glides seamlessly through a barrage of techno tracks from Pysk, Bjarki and Abdulla Rashim to name a very few.

Mathew Jonson is behind the fourth Afterlife Voyage podcast, furthering a relationship that already counts multiple club shows and a track on the Realm Of Consciousness Pt.II compilation.

Mathew’s genius ear for harmonics and sequencing shines on this rare DJ mix, stitched together with flair (and a hand from his brother Nathan) at the enviable Freedom Engine Studios. It has a similarly lucid flow to his renowned live sets, but this format allows Mathew to show his more eclectic side. There’s a good helping of the old-school, with lush, Detroit chords washing over restrained, classic house beats, and a spacy Italo feel. An essential, club-ready selection from someone whose tastes evidently extend far further.

Artefakt is a collaboration between Dutch producers Robin Koek and Nick Lapien that share a love for melancholic, hypnotic voodoo music. Joining their perspectives in a meticulous, hands-on working method, the two bring a balanced and hypnotizing sound to the club. Be it in the form of a dj set or their full- fledged hardware live set crystallizing in the mind and oscillating the body. Despite having a discography that dates back to the last millennium, Pittsburgh’s Shawn Rudiman has never quite enjoyed the spotlight he deserves. His often analog electro and techno manages to be tough but not austere, and it has come under his own name as well as in the duo THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) on a range of boutique labels. He’s a prolific artist who this month looks back on his career with a two disc retrospective, Timespan on Pittsburgh Tracks, that offers largely brand new tracks which “go from base-level warehouse to more cerebral sophistication”. 

That versatility shows when he lays down one of his mesmeric live shows, as he has done for us in this exclusive new set. It’s just 45 minutes long but packs a lot in, from soul infused Detroit techno to elastic house. Passages of serenity are often followed by a heavily percussive wake-up call or serrated acid line, but never do things feel forced. From dark to light, visceral to beautiful, it has many different moods and is a great reminder of the talents of one of techno’s lesser known stars.

When we first received this mix, we weren’t really sure if it was really “Surprise”, so we put it aside and just let it simmer for a bit; it didn’t sit there for too long. We again picked it up to give it another careful listen, and we have to admit that it turned out to be actually really interesting to get into! It contains a fun twist from techno into electro and yet at the same time keeping the beats & rhythm flowing throughout the whole set. We were pretty sure that our audience would have open-minds to like it as much as we do!

Remember the time when you dance like there’s nobody watching? Or the time when you simply want to groove with your friends on the dance floor? Simple, easy, and guaranteed FUN!
