We pulled up to Jeff’s Jewelry place
Dad had a look I couldn’t quite trace
Jeff met us both with a quiet smile
Said, “Ain’t seen you two in a while”
then he handed Dad a velvet sack
Opened it slow, then stepped back
Inside was a locket, gold and devine
With all our names etched inside
and a photo of us all look'en just fine
We’d bought a lot of things, some big, some small
But that was the best thing of them all
A photo of us in the autumn leaves
Holdin’ tight to what we believe
It wasn’t about gold, or what it cost
It was love you carry, never lost
I learned then, what a gift can mean
That was the best thing I've ever seen
On the ride back home, I looked around
At the fields, the barn, the frozen ground
Then I saw the rack behind Dad’s seat
Where his old Remington used to be
That rifle was part of our everyday
Hung in the truck like it’d always stay
But now it was gone, and I understood
He’d sold it off for better then good
Mama opened the box that night
Tears in her eyes, soft candlelight
She held that locket close to her heart
Like it stitched our lives into one small part
And Dad just smiled, didn’t say a word
But in that silence, everything was heard
