Rounding up a year which saw crucial releases from Iron Curtis and Quarion, »Can’t Help It« is the long awaited return of sample wizards Session Victim to the ep format. This Retreat 3-tracker is a profound, subtle and quite melancholic affair, perfect for those emotional moments in the early morning. Skillfully arranged and featuring the impeccable playing of Linnart Ebel, »Can’t Help It« is once again an essential statement from one of House Music’s most fascinating duo.
 »Pass The Diesel« begins with a stuttering beat, seagull like noises and muted chords that wouldn’t be out of place on a vintage Group Home instrumental. Staying on the aquatic tip, Session Victim introduce a beautiful Rhodes sequence which takes the track into a dream-like – dare we say californian? – direction. Spiced up with gentle synth noodlings, ethereal vocal snippets and a magical strings motive, »Pass The Diesel« bathes in the deeper shades of House without ever drowning in a cliché, thanks to its snapping drums and vivid arrangement. 
Slowing things down a notch, »Hyuwee« starts off with what is maybe the most unconventional instrument in Session Victim’s repertoire, the banjo! But the fear of witnessing these down-to-earth-boys actually becoming the boys-down-south vanishes after 30 seconds: a melancholic 3-Chord theme, snappy 808 patterns and funky drum fills lead the tune in a familiar (but vast) territory. Linnart Ebel’s talent is put to great use with subtle guitar licks that give a lively feel to the whole song. You will notice that Session Victim have labeled »Hyuwee« as an »instrumental«. Does it mean that we can expect a vocal version in the near future? All bets are on as to who will provide the vocals to this one … 
Flip the record over for the magnificent »Tearwiper«, a slow-house groover which might be Session Victim’s deepest excursion on wax so far. Abyssal chords, radio effects and a dragging 105 bpm beat set the stage for a grand sonic adventure. The track breaks down after the introduction of the guitar theme and a warm sub bass takes center stage in order to drive »Tearwiper« in a confident manner. Shakers and bubbling synths are floating around whereas Linnart’s hypnotic playing provides a steady backing to the bassline. Another breakdown and the elements are nicely washed away while a thoughtful guitar solo brings this underwater journey to an end.

After their storming debut on Chasing Unicorns, which found its way into the boxes of everyone from Tensnake to Danny Howells to Osunlade, London duo Howson's Groove return to the label for a two-tracker of throbbing house grooves. 'Body & Soul', backed with remixes from Fybe:One and Arkist, also marks the label's first foray into the world of vinyl distribution...

Howson’s Groove are London based DJs and producers crafting their own style of UK bass music and have released previously on Chasing Unicorns as well as having remixed for the likes of Todd Terry on Southern Fried records. Ranging across multiple tempos, they fuse the nostalgic, fundamental sounds of garage and house with a modern musicality that makes their tracks instantly identifiable.

‘Body & Soul’ is a spine tingling cut of house music with effortless grooves sweeping the whole along. Various synths and bendy tones bring light and musicality to the arrangement and deft key stabs keep things moving along at an inviting pace. It’s lush, spiritual sounding house that also works on the floor, which is no mean feat. 

Fybe:One, co-owner of the Shades label and soon to release his debut LP remixes this one into a woozy, louche and aloof bit of stepping bass music. Classic cow bells, squelchy chords and rubbery bass all make it a captivating listen. 

Howson’s Groove also contribute another original, ‘Shake Up’. This one plays with chopped up vocals, stitching them into a tapestry of more freewheeling synths, Rhodes like chords and skipping, garage inflected beats. It’s expansive and expressive stuff that really jumps out of the speakers and lures you into an emotive core - all underpinned by a heavy reese bass

Remixing this one is Bristol’s Arkist, who has released a number of times on Apple Pips as well as Hotflush and Hypercolour. His remix is a typically choppy affair with lively chord stabs, cut up beats and bubbling, gorgeously textured melodies that warm you right through. 

This is yet more fresh and exciting music that fuses together a number of different contemporary styles without kowtowing to any one in particular.

Sao Paulo born, Berlin based Fernando Seixlack delivers 4 trashed up jams for X-Kalay's fourth outing Bed Bug Bites.

Hot off the back of his debut LP for Delroy Edwards' LA Club Resource as alter-ego Innyster, Seixlack serves up an EP of trademark, super raw, machine funk. Spanning the full gambit of dredged up acid, synth stacked daydreams and straight up 4x4, the breadth of this EP showcases a real talent.

'Taxes' opens the A side with some real Black Flag acid shit, it’s the crushed up remains scraped off the back of an overused MC505, real gnarled up, smouldering business. Amolado is all cosmic melody, disco swag and a healthy nod to Fly-Lo with that kicked back groove - so good! Wintergreen recovers hi-hats and cymbals out of the mucked up remains of your dustbin before dropping into an infectious live synth jam, whilst closing things off, Sofazone is an emotive, lush, electro tinged cut with chattering robotic synths and mesmerising pads... This one takes you away.

We're super happy to announce the inaugural EP on our new ambient sub label, Silver Lake, courtesy of Tokyo based artist, Aquarium. Having released an eye catching debut 12” on Manchester label Natural Sciences last year, Aquarium recently followed up with an equally impressive tape release on London based Coastal Haze. His next effort, "Luxury Water Jewels", is a jaw dropping excursion into textural ambience and deep electronica.

The EP is a daydream infused memory of summer, so says Akira - 

Opening track ‘Floating’ is the foreword - diving in and out of water, there is the essence throughout of being the avatar in your very own computer game. Lush deep pools of water and a surrounding green jungle is the setting for your journey. The piano chords strike the most eerie of melancholic shivers and introduce the undeniable Japanese theme of  'mono no aware' - a sensibility which goes on to haunt the whole of the A side.

‘Swimming’brings about transient, human textures – coming up for air we breathe and then dive deep through the ocean. Much like DIY mixtapes and epic albums, this feels like a gentle interval, a place outside of space and time, hinting subtly at what is to come.

‘Planet Aquarium (outro)’ closes out the A side like some magical early 90’s vine - video games, apple mac and cosmic 8-bit dreams… A strong nod to Air’s Alone In Kyoto and Squarepusher’s masterpiece, Tommib. This is Scarlett Johansson gazing out across the blinking lights of Tokyo’s midnight skyline. 

On the B, ‘Sandalwood’ is the moment after a dreamy sleep, we open our eyes for the first time and see clearly. Underpinning this track the 4x4 kick and deep sub give slo-mo club sensibilities – this wouldn’t be out of place in DJ Sprinkles record bag, gently building those early floors. 

Closing things out, ‘Water and Sunshine’ continues this theme and closes the story arc. Introducing percussive elements to those never-ending pads we are reminded of the deep oceans of ‘Swimming’, yet with a twist of club practicality. This one is shifting gears, set transitioning material. Just as well suited to opening a dark floor or an early morning terrace as it is for those hazy headphone moments…

Big one incoming! Floating in from the cosmic shore comes outer space traveller and other dimension explorer, Fred Sheperd aka No Moon. First turning heads on Hungarian imprint ‘Blorp’ earlier in 2016 with a 10” two track offering, we are fit to burst with excitement at the prospect of sharing his debut 12”…

Opening the A, ‘Manc1010101’ sees us depart from the lush green planet earth and scorch through the atmosphere in a burst of punching subs, clattering snares and flying melodies. Looking back through the waves of resonant haze we see our home shrinking into the distance. 

‘Nothing Else Matters’ opens with the weightiest kick you’ll hear this side of Alpha Centauri, constructed from the blackest dark matter known to man, this behemoth underpins our journey as we push on through the inner planets. Smashing through the asteroid belt we emerge in the shadow of the gas giant, Jupiter. Ethereal wandering pads and a warbling 303 frame our perspective in the presence of such critical mass before a soundscape of lightning bolts crashes down and we are propelled onwards by the hungry, pulsating sine wave bass…

On the flip, engines are now running hot as we are flung through the outer planets – ‘Listing Lazily to the Left’ soundtracks our journey past the majestic Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, blazing through space. This is a cosmic jam of celestial quality; improv jazz keys, languid stepped basslines and deliciously skittish percussion all shimmering in a bath of otherworldly distortion. Next level stuff!

Finally, ‘Everything’s Coming up Millhouse’ sees us break free of the restraints of our solar system and into the deep recesses of outer space. Swelling pads give way to a mesmeric percussive hook, deep subs lend weight and rhythm and interplaying melodies build a yearning sense of retrospection. We have travelled far, and what a journey.

But can we ever go back?
