Three unedited & one processed test recording; sources were recorded at the same time, with the same settings, on the same section of fence wire, all recorded using a Sound Devices Mix-Pre recorder + the processed extract showing that emulating some 'geophone' responses, but with less noise and a wider response is quick, easy & free.

0:00 - 1:00 - two JrF c-series contact microphones + impedance adaptors into a Sound Devices mix-pre recorder. No processing or eq-ing - this is straight out of the recorder. As you can hear there is a wide frequency response and the overall sound is rich and detailed. 

 1:05 - 2:05 - the same recording processed in Reaper, to emulate commercial 'geophone' responses, using one of the free plug-in's that come with that DAW (digital audio workstation). One setting, applied in a few seconds. This can also be done in live performance settings via a DAW and some interfaces.

2:10 - 3:10 - one brand of commercially available 'geophone' device. There is more noise, some flutter & a narrower frequency response.

3:14 - 4:14 - another brand of commercially available geophone* device (USA). This one, in my opinion, appears to have not been correctly adapted for audio output.

The JrF c-series contact mics have a very wide frequency range, able to record down to around 13hz. 

The human hearing range cannot hear sound below 19-20hz. 

Digital recorders have an in-built limiter set to 10hz so it is impossible to actually record infrasound below that without a hack for the recorder.

Commercially available geophones often use rare earth elements.

Geophone / Infrasound recording has become somewhat fashionable and I have been asked to sell the geophones I have adapted & worked with for many years. I've used them on installations, performances, projects and established series' of works. Some of the results have featured on the albums 'salts | adagios', 'audible silence | tate modern', 'elusive fields' & 'room tone'.  Whilst I continue to work on ideas for a stable, lower cost and ethically responsible design, I don't currently sell geophones, including for the reasons already mentioned.

As a listener and artist myself I use the mics I build to get under the surface of environments and objects and the listening process itself. Hopefully these tests will demonstrate the further possibilities of the c-series microphones.

It should be noted that my aim here isn't to dissuade anyone from buying other devices, but to simply point out that if you already have JrF c-series mics, don't have the budget or time for other equipment, you can already record some infrasound, and adjust the response via processing in a DAW.

A pack of wild Eurasian wolf howls after sunset in mountain forest of Vercors.
One male starts howling, quickly joined by the others in what might most probably be a rallying cry.

We can hear, behind the stridulating insects (Upland Green Bush-cricket), European edible dormouse squeaking and throwing things from the top of the trees.

Thousand of sand fleas (talitrus saltator) were eating a large jellyfish on the beach at Oleron island (France). We put 2 hydrophones inside to listen. We can hear the fleas jumping around but also the waves from the inside perspective of the jellyfish.
