“Hooligans” took me into a subculture of violence far beyond what I expected. Drugs, disillusioned youth, street level and horrific acts of violence, vengeance, rage, criminality and brutality reign supreme within the pages. I’ve never read a more action packed book. When the street gang of “Westside Homeboys” target the “Metalheads” a war is set into motion that spirals into an all-out bloodbath. The “Metalheads”, not quite as street savvy or animalistically violent as the Westside Gangsters, refuse to submit and accept the heinous acts committed against them and members of their group.

“Hooligans” could easily rival the most violent episode of “Gangland”. There were times when I found myself fighting alongside Het, leader of the “Metalheads”. Author Chaz Fenwick does an amazing job of not only crafting a story of the struggle between the two groups but the individual struggles and horrors faced by many of the characters. It isn’t easy to decipher the good guys from the bad as almost every character involved with these two groups has a sufficient amount of “bad”, but they are not all inherently evil and uncaring. Some characters are beyond redemption while others are simply misguided, abused and unloved individuals trying to find a place of acceptance. “Hooligans” kept me flipping the pages for hours with its fast pace and non-stop action. This is a substantial read and it doesn’t take long to find yourself completely removed from the safety of your couch and fighting for your life among these two groups of criminals, miscreants and wayward young people.
