THE PEOPLE UNDERGROUND are a duo based in Liège, Belgium.

Sharing a mutual love for MASSIVE ATTACK and NINE INCH NAILS, singer-songwriter CATHERINE and guitarist-producer JACQUES have been playing together since 2018. Though they may seem to come out of nowhere, they aren't new to the musical field. However, having nothing to hide doesn't necessarily mean one has everything to show, and rather than showing off on stage, they prefer to write songs in the studio (at least for the time being).

When they want to be really presumptuous, they like to describe their sound as "John Carpenter meets Cocteau Twins" – which is pretentious indeed, and yet somehow appropriate.

After a first digital EP on Cheap Satanism Records in December 2019, a music video to the song "Souls", and the double A-side "Love Your Neighbor" in June 2020, The People Underground are back with "Disconnected", on which they invited many guests: TONY WAKEFORD (SOL INVICTUS, CRISIS) on additional bass, and an international "choir" including CHRISTOPHE CRÉNEL, SEESAYLE, OLI SPLEEN, GAËTAN STREEL, KEVIN ROBERT THOMSON (ENABLERS, HAZEL ATLAS) and DOMINIQUE VAN CAPPELLEN-WALDOCK (BABY FIRE).

With its very 80's instrumentals and catchy choirs, Disconnected asks twenty-one "existential" questions, not unlike the ones found on the motivational posters that are so successful on social media – all the while suggesting more questions that many of us are asking ourselves during this global pandemic:

What will the world be like next?
Are we going to become better people?
Can we leave our habits behind?

Like its lyrics, the music video to Disconnected may or may not be taken seriously. Directed by NICOLAS MONFORT who went through hours of stock footage, it expresses the fear that maybe our society isn't ready to change in depth, and that "the world after" may be worse...

In the meantime, let's embrace Pina Bausch's formula:
"Dance, dance, otherwise we are all lost!"

After signing JOY AS A TOY who claim to play "tennis pop" it was only natural for Cheap Satanism Records to include Vitas Guerulaïtis in their roster. The name of the band is obviously a nod to one of the most blazing players in the history of tennis. VITAS GERULAITIS was this inveterate party animal not always at the forefront of his opponents.

The band comprises three french activists who sought refuge in Brussels. One may wonder what brought the trio together as their drummer (DAVID COSTENARO) is an image editor who loves monoskiing and worships JIM THOMPSON, their keyboard player (CÉLIA JANKOWSKI) specialises in performance and studies the behaviour of flies, and their guitar player (ISMAËL COLOMBANI) is a mystical violin player who gives lectures once in a while.

Vitas Guerulaïtis is Cheap Satanism Records' first band to have no connection whatsoever with satanism or anti-church movements. In order to make up for this flaw, they promised to write a 6'66''-long track.

Their debut album is released in conjunction with French label TANDORI (DRIVE WITH A DEAD GIRL, MARIA GORETTI QUARTET). Vitas Guerulaïtis are tightrope walkers who prefer to work without a net. They will even do the splits and achieve a subtle balance between dadaist punk and psychedelic kraut rock which will turn your skull upside down.

To counter-balance the tension provided by their music, they have chosen to explore the realm of the absurd and the poetry that lies within. One moment they will go for lame play on words ("Chomeuse Go On"), the next they will imagine that they are standing on a hill, being filmed in wide shot ("Ben Hur"). They will also question the Holy Virgin's right to early retirement ("15 août").

As for the 6'66''-long track they had promised, it will have to wait. Vitas Guerulaïtis were unable to stick to the 6'66''-long format of "Panda Géant" and took the song way beyond.

Since 2018, GREGORY DUBY, guitar (K-BRANDING, JESUS IS MY SON, SOLAH) and DAVID.C, drums (VITAS GUERULAITIS, TAT2NOISACT) have been started their own cult (which is translated by 'secte' in french).

They've been in the noise scene for years and are based in cosmopolitan Brussels. They imagine oriental dunes on which DICK DALE would flirt with MUNIR BASHIR, ramble in a desert with a Turkish priesthood fed by THE DOORS, or the invocation of an ancient icon from Vilvoorde with a Syrian slide.

SECTE offers melodies from here and abroad, mixed with their own arrangements, as if a Cairo radio station were constantly spitting out its hits from the other side of the ring road. The duo nonchalantly oscillates between the influences of 75 DOLLAR BILL and POPOL VUH.

The self-titled album, supported by a number of Belgian and French labels, alternates between tight tracks such as "Longa D" with its surf accents and more free or ethereal tracks such as "Syria" or "Fin de Sabbat".

Since the release of their 4-title EP in 2018, SECTE have played around thirty concerts in Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany. With this vinyl, the duo is back on the road to share these new compositions and enroll fervent followers.

Fabrizio has extensively performed in EU and USA including sold out theatres, sordid bars, big festivals, art galleries, empty spaces and worked, among the others, with DAMO SUZUKI, XIU XIU, BABY DEE, DAVID TIBET, JOHANN JOHANNSSON, LITTLE ANNIE, MATMOS, NURSE WITH WOUND, FOVEA HEX, JOCHEN ARBEIT, SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE, DAVID J, CINDYTALK...

Fabrizio is a member of the electro-acoustic project BLIND CAVE SALAMANDER along with Paul Beauchamp and cellist Julia Kent and of Almagest! with singer/actor Ernesto Tomasini and fellow musicians Evor Ameise and Paul Beauchamp. He also is one of the founding member of the experimental cult band Larsen.

She's part of the Berlin artist collective THE PIZZA SUICIDE CLUB as well as head master of the art and music video label SHOCKING FILM. She's diving straight into the strange whenever she can!

For this record Tzii invited Liina for a special collaboration between the two artists, for her to bring words to the story that lives in his music. "The road trip through the abyss" and all its parts - the short movies, music and texts - have been created in a constant interaction, during times in Brussels, Berlin and on the road wandering together in Eastern Europe.

GIL MORTIO, CLEMENT NOURRY and JEAN-PHILIPPE DE GHEEST formed JOY AS A TOY to satisfy their love of fun and games. The band's main ambition is to get the audience to dance to their raw and largely improvised rock music which is based on powerful riffs and radical atmosphere changes. The trio is capable of suddenly switching from a simple melody to sonic madness that verges on trippy, psychedelic music.

As a result, they will wear the audience out and leave it feeling empty. But the band might not get everyone to dance. They are very much aware of this paradox. They may rule the dancefloor just as well as they may suck the energy out of the listener. They have even made this Joy As A Toy's registrered trademark since they claim to play "tennis pop" and "vampire rock".

The latter description could only but wet Cheap Satanism Records' appetite. Soon the young, Brussels-based label's pseudo-satanists were to make a deal with the trio.

A 43-minute long monster called "Valparaiso" was born. This city from Chili is the only destination where none of Joy As A Toy's members have traveled to. Recorded in Brussels in two days with special guests MAI LEV,FRED "LYENN" JACQUES and Berlin-based belgian vibraphone player ELS VANDEWEYER, Valparaiso is packed with exhilaration, energy, poetry and unbridled humour. It's a kind of high-octane mix between THE TALKING HEADS and ROBERT WYATT, sprinkled with DEERHOOF's tongue in cheek attitude.

Cheap Satanism Records celebrates its second anniversary in style: the worthless Demon worshipers decided to play with the number 2 and release two split EPs including two of their seminal bands, KEIKI and Joy As A Toy, who will present their second release on the label sometime in 2012.

On one of these records Joy As A Toy cross swords with Germanotta Youth, an Italian band which counts MASSIMO PUPILLO from ZU among its members.

Joy As A Toy is currently finishing recording their second album "Dead As A Dodo" which will be released in April on the label, and they immortalize this crazy project performed during the first edition of ZomBIFFF Night that Cheap Satanism Records organized at the the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival in April 2011. Bass player PIERRE VERLOESEM (X-LEGGED SALLY, FLAT EARTH SOCIETY...) had joined them on stage and the band used the occasion to play analog synthesizers and samplers to deliver songs inspired by the soundtracks of the master of Horror films, DARIO ARGENTO. On this split the band cuts the "freely inspired" to cover in the sauce they like "Profondo Rosso" theme composed by GOBLIN in 1975 and they conclude their vinyl face with a horrendously mad original track.

The description "Horrendously mad" would suit Germanotta Youth and one just has to read their statement of intent to be convinced: "CICCONE YOUTH was born in the 80s while MADONNA (also known as LOUISE VERONICA CICCONE) was ruling the world. We are in 2010, LADY GAGA's era (STEFANI JOANNE ANGELINA GERMANOTTA by her real name). So here comes the time of Germanotta Youth!!!”. That says it all. Almost. With this split album Germonatta Youth who describe their music as "Cybergrind Techno Fast & Furious", play the same game as Joy As A Toy. The trio from Rome presents a cover of the famous "Halloween" theme turning JOHN CARPENTER's original song upside down before delivering a horribly sweltering crude-sounding track.

"Greetings from Grinchland", CAZZURILLO's new album is dedicated to her hometown, Milan, fashion capital. She ironically renamed this showcase city as Grinchland.

Proclaimed DIY Artist, with voluntarily discontinuous and messy musical process, this singular performer has just completed a subjective album, which by its narrative form and quality of catchy songs reveals a bold revolt.

The eleven tracks on the album tell brief of life in her city of origin, the restless elite, the hysterical glamour. CAZZURILLO conveys her raw sense of exclusion and the solitude towards the careerism, the easy money and the hypocrisy of the golden city.

She sets herself aside in a corner, leaves her emerged memories in a sound layer cake resulting from an obsessive cut and paste, overdubbing and mixing accompanied with slowly melancholic voices.

All songs were composed and arranged by CAZZURILLO with the precious collaboration of some guests as BEPPE MONDINI, MARCO MENARDI (RE BELUGA), ROBERTO MAGGIONI (RAUBAUS), GABRIEL MARZI.

The album was recorded and mixed in a home studio and completed later on at Bunker Studio in collaboration with ANDREA ROVACCHI (JULIE'S HAIRCUT).

Convulsif is a collective and band which originated in the year 2014, initiated by the bass player LOÏC GROBÉTY. After two conceptual CDs in crossover style- Jazz, Metal, Classic, Free –and changing collaborations of various artists and musicians, Convulsif started to concentrate to heavier sounds with a fixed line up. Convulsif became a quartet focusing to an enriched tension between composition and improvisation in powerful sounds and experiments at the limits of styles and musical languages. With its special and outstanding instrumentation – a classic rhythm section with Loïc Grobéty on bass and MAXIME HÄNSENBERGER on drums and a heavy amplified, treated violin & bass clarinet, played by JAMASP JHABVALA respectively CHRISTIAN MÜLLER – the band goes deep in the sound of the actual rock scene and mix different tendencies to a new unknown conglomerate: Doom, Drone, Black Metal and Noise are played with the means of conceptual improvisation and imposed themes. Cheap Satanism Records have been up to something devilish again. They've released a political single called "Quoi? (BHV)" and they've thrown it like a pie in the face of Belgium's political scene under the name of The Real Brussels Sound Revolution.

New Beat fans will instantly identify this project as a tribute to a belgian single which was released in the Eighties, about one of the country's politician found in his underwear and shirt, his coat torn, lost if not up North, then further than North. "Quoi?" is both a tribute and a parody of "Qui?" of cult fame. This time round, the song's theme has nothing to do with VDB. It's about BHV, the three initials that have been on the lips of every belgian politician for the past three years.

In case you were wondering, The Real Brussels Sound Revolution is in no way linked to the return of BSR.

Jesus Is My Son is the contemplative solo project by the experimental guitarist GRÉGORY DUBY.
He is active in the field of noisy and improvised music, living and composing in Brussels, Belgium. During 10 years, he played in the noise rock trio K-BRANDING. Thereafter he formed the experimental band ZOHO (with AYMERIC DE TAPOL, ARNAUD PAQUOTTE and BENJAMIN CHAVAL). He has played with experimental musicians such as OLIVIER TOULEMONDE and BEN BERTRAND. In Jesus Is My Son, he emphasizes with his electric guitar the silence within melodies. Beside his activities as a musician, he owns the label FF HHH and manages with two friends MANDAÏ DISTRIBUTION, an international independent distributor of alternative music.

Jesus Is My Son contains elements of minimalism, folk music and contemporary music, as well as compositions based on ambient, oriental and medieval music. Aspiring to create melancholic and naked music, Grégory Duby's influences range from ERIK SATIE to DEREK BAILEY via POPOL VUH and LOREN CONNORS. Jesus Is My Son invites the audience to listen contemplatively to the electric guitar.

"Tout a une fin (même l'amour)" (which would translate into "Everything has an end and so has love") is the 4th album by Jesus Is My Son. It marks the end of a trilogy about love which started in 2016 with the LP "SOLAH#2" (SOLAH meaning  "Songs Of Love And Heat", released by INI.ITU). This first part was dedicated to the themes deception and searching the love. "Faust et l'Enfer de Dante" (which would translate into "Faust and the Dante's inferno"), the second part of the trilogy was released in 2017. The themes centered on love in progression, doubts and promises.

"Tout a une fin (même l'amour)" tries to find a balance between the fact that on the one hand, each love story is limited and on the other hand, love is eternal. The album addresses the solitude that exists inside a romantic relationship, the ignorance of tomorrow, and the fear of its ending. It accentuates that love incorporates also lightness thanks to the innocent trust in love.

Cortez present a masterful display of roiling metallic hardcore on their crushing new album "No More Conqueror".

This thing is a colossal sounding clash of sounds, with a massive production courtesy of RAPHAEL BOVEY (ZATOKREV, IMPURE WILHELMINA, CONVULSIF).

The Swiss four piece conjure sounds here with clear influence from bands like BOTCH and CONVERGE with a heavy focus on composition and a clear understanding of how to produce a riff. Guitars churn out howling, odd time chord sequences underpinned by clashing, jangling high strings and tight, punchy drums. The vocals from ANTOINE LÄNG (who is also a member of BLIND THORNS) come shouted from a distance, delivered with force but without becoming an indecipherable growl or screech, they have more the sound of the impassioned orator and work with the music, rather than sitting over it and overpowering the instrumentation.

In places all of these elements come together to produce an almost mechanical sound of intensely precise rhythmic punishment before breaking out into looser riffs or a melodic lead guitar section. Often songs will follow a particular riff or chord sequence as a theme and build on that through variations on the theme in a way almost similar to post-metal bands like RUSSIAN CIRCLES, but in a much more song focused and less atmosphere obsessed manner.

Special mention should be made of the album art, created by HENRIJ PREISS whom the art follows the ethos of forward thinking traditionalism presented in the Cortez sound.

Paracelze is a bonesetter which cooks an intimate mixture of three constituents in an oak barrel. The main ingredient is a mineral crushed rock. The second element is a noisy dislocated metal. The last additive is an organic acid. The mixture is then ground and blended for five or six months. Crystals are later evaporated, separated and recomposed dozens of times during one year. Finally, when Paracelze has succeeded to obtain two satisfactory samples, it adds an oxidizer in order to engrave the whole thing on a vinyl plate.

Paracelze is an avant-rock band from Switzerland built on a particular line-up : violin, bass, drums. Therefore no guitarist, but a lot of distortion, electronic sounds, effects appearing out of nowhere. The combo play a direct but complex and versatile music, influenced by numerous bands from the rock and metal scenes as well as pop and experimental electro.

Cheap Satanism Records started as a joke. This lead to more jokes. Initially the label was built around a personality and this personality’s projects. But since, it has become the base of a highly creative game, determined to rule, using force and cunning if necessary.

At first, Cheap Satanism Records just wanted to make Dominique Van Cappellen-Waldock’s work known to a larger public. This half-british, half-belgian singer, nicknamed “the PJ Harvey from Anderlecht”, is a member of Keiki. And Keiki is the project which fits best within the concept of cheap demonology since Keiki claims to play satanic pop. Cheap Satanism Records is ready to sacrifice a few billy goats and make a few deals with the devil in order to get this much underrated band to gain access to a wider audience.

One signature lead to another and Canadian band Trike joined Cheap Satanism Records. The duo claims to play new wave mixed with dutch pop. To us Trike’s music sounds like up-tempo and theatrical synth-pop, with surreal touches. It is poetical, urban and sometimes provocative. Ok, there is nothing devilish about this, but like Cheap Satanism Records, they love the spirit of b- or z-cinema. Hence the adjective cheap.

Since it is as megalomaniac as a demon from a Thirties b-movie, the label won’t limit itself to managing the careers of a few friends. Cheap Satanism Records is more than just a record label. It is also a brand name which includes the organisation of shows, special events, a magazine, festivals and exhibitions. In short, many things will happen under this banner – 666 projects at least!
