This track is a tribute to the outstanding Palestinian intellectual and humanist, Edward Said. This electronic audio-collage mixes the voice of the late Edward Said with excerpts from Che Guevara's 1964 speech at the United Nations. Martin Luther King once wrote: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" (Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16th 1963). Edward Said and Che Guevara, in very different ways, pushed for the universal values of justice, freedom, equality and most importantly solidarity between peoples of the world in standing up united against injustice.

Rissala min Qalandia (letter from Qalandia)

the samples used on this track are based on a recording of the late arab poet Nizar Qabbani (1923-1998) reading his famous piece "Rissala min taht il ma" (Letter from under water). Nizar kabbani one of the greatest contemporary poets in the arab world was also known as the women's poet, the poet of love and the homeland poet. Qalandia is an israeli Checkpoint halfway between Ramallah and Jerusalem.

Listerners call in, give their date and time of birth to find out what the stars tell them about their luck in love, health, work, finances...signs of life like anywhere else in the world, here too, people dream of happiness, marriage, a better job, etc...
(* Bethlehem is a palestinian city with a population of 40,000. It is one of the areas under full control of the palestinian authority since 1995)

John Berger was an oustanding intellectual, writer, poet, artist and humanist. He was a strong supporter of the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and self-determination.

huge water wheels (known as Norias) are a symbol of the resistance of the people of Hama (since the massacre in 1982 to the ones they suffer today), and all the Syrian civil society. the piece kicks off with the haunting sound of a Hama water wheel. 
along the 8 min of the track, the sound of the Norias gradually mix with various ambient field recordings performed in Hama. eventually the voice of 
Hama's murdered revolution singer Ibrahim Qashoush repeatedly breaks through the audioscapes singing Yalla Irhal ya Bashar

Full 60 min recording of a DJ set performed by Checkpoint 303 at London's Brixton Academy, opening for a Massive Attack show in Feb 2007. The mix features raw tunes with roots in contemporary Arabic underground, New York electronica and Manchester avant-garde. An urban mix of electronic percussions and oriental melodies blended with field recordings straight out of the sonic landscape of the Middle East. This mix also features a few tracks from CP-303's early releases.

CP303 - DJ Set - Opening for Massive Attack at London Brixton Academy

On R.I.M.I.X (KKV, 2019), DJs and sound artists from the Palestinian and Tunisian alternative scene join forces to pay tribute to Rim Banna by remixing seven of her songs. Just like Rim, the remixes are a mixture of eternal optimism, defiance and resistance as well as beauty, devotion and fragility. The up-beat, electronica, dub, house and club-style pieces are composed in the spirit of celebration of Rim's legacy. This album, released exactly 1 year after Rim Banna passed away, is a reminder that her voice and message are here to stay.

Through its compositions, collected sounds and noise, Checkpoint 303 spreads a message of peace and a call for the respect of human rights. Contrasting with the mainstream media's exclusive depiction of violence and suffering in the middle-east, CP-303's sound collages also report on the heroic hope that subsists in the region as well as the seemingly banal but ever so meaningful little things that embody a daily search for normality in a state of emergency.
