Founded in 1979 by Herbert "Little Herbert" Vincent Reid Jr., this independent rock label emerged from the vibrant heart of New York City's East Village, defying racial and genre conventions to create a platform for marginalized voices. Little Herbert, a Black American musician and visionary, channeled his life experiences into building a label that would challenge the status quo and leave an indelible mark on the NYC rock scene .

The Genesis of Cheektowaga Records
Historical Context and Foundation
Cheektowaga Records began as Snap Records in 1979 before evolving into its final incarnation. Named after the Seneca word for "Land of the Crab-apples," the label reflected Vince's deep roots in upstate New York while embracing the rebellious spirit of downtown NYC's punk and rock scene. At a time when racial barriers in the music industry were significant, Vince pioneered a space focused on independent rock and college rock, rather than conforming to expectations for Black-owned labels to specialize in soul, R&B, or hip-hop .

Entrepreneurial Vision
Herbert's entrepreneurial journey was fueled by his rejection of societal limitations. Despite warnings that his Black identity would hinder his success, he pursued his vision with unwavering determination. His approach combined non-traditional elements with seasoned musicianship, creating a signature sound that blurred genre boundaries .

Cheektowaga Records featured a diverse roster of artists, including:

Box 7: One of the first bands signed to the label, representing Brooklyn's rock scene.

Next Generation: A North Carolina-based group contributing to the label's eclectic mix.

Xica Jool (also known as Nacha Mendez or Marghereta Cordero): A flamboyant Spanish-American singer who added club-friendly dance music to the label's primarily rock-oriented catalog .
