For the first time ever, SNOUT on vinyl, who’d a thunk it! Nineties pop maestros SNOUT return out of the blue to reissue their classic album 'Circle High and Wide' on vinyl and digitally on Cheersquad Records & Tapes.

Snout are an Australian indie rock band who were formed in Melbourne in 1991 and disbanded in 2002. They released numerous recordings & were twice nominated for an ARIA award.

Founded by Ross McLennan in Melbourne in 1991, Snout made their first recorded appearance the following year on a Half A Cow Records compilation, Slice Two. They went on to be a fixture of the Australian indie music scene until their demise in 2002.

The band's first release in their own right was in 1993 with the Cleans and Brightens EP, through the Au Go Go label. In 1994 they released their debut album, What's That Sound?
The line up at this time consisted of Ross McLennan (Bass and vocals), Rob Wolf (Guitar and backing vocals) and Hugh Williams (Drums).

Soon after the recording of What's That Sound?, Rob and Hugh left the band. McLennan recruited Greg Ng for guitar and backing vocal duties. Ng had previously fronted Melbourne shoegaze exponents Afterglow. New drummer, Ewan McCartney had previously performed with Ripe.

This combination recorded the band's most successful releases; The New Pop Dialogue (1996) and Circle High and Wide (1998).

This lineup remained stable until 1999, when Ng left the band and was replaced by Anthony Paine, of High Pass Filter, who played guitar on the band's final album, Managing Good Looks (2001). This album was released on W.Minc Productions run by Graham Lee (The Triffids) and Steve Miller (The Moodists). Two tracks featured Rebecca Barnard on backing vocals.

Snout played extensively on the live circuit in Australia, leaving Melbourne regularly to tour in their own right and with other prominent names of the era. They also played festivals such as The Big Day Out, Falls Festival, Sunny Sedgewick, Livid and Meredith Music Festival.

Snout played their final gig in November 2002, in Melbourne at the Rob Roy Hotel, now known as the Workers Club, Fitzroy.

During the 2010 Australian Federal election campaign, Australian Greens candidate Adam Bandt, professed that "I am a fan of jangle-pop bands like Bidston Moss, Underground Lovers, Ross McLennan and Snout,"

Fast forward to 2019 and new Melbourne label Cheersquad Records & Tapes, owned by Snout’s long time booking agent Wally Kempton, are reissuing the album “Circle High & Wide” with a view to reissuing the entire back catalogue over time.

This will be the first time Snout albums have been released on vinyl anywhere in the world.

With this self titled album, first 100 sold on preorder will be on yellow & black vinyl, as Chris was a passionate Tiger.

Chris Wilson has been an essential part of blues and rock music in Australia since taking the stage with the Sole Twisters almost 40 years ago. Stints with Harem Scarem and Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls followed and he formed his own band, Crown Of Thorns, in 1982.

Chris Wilson - Who Do You Love

Things happen slowly in the world of Minibikes… Time seemed to be a big influence on writing, recording and releasing this album. It all started when I walked past the mural that’s on the album cover. It was an aquamarine slice of paradise on the side of a motel, and it set the mood for writing the songs. I wanted to capture lush fantasy and grimy reality in the same place, so I spent a long time gazing at this scene, trying to evoke that feeling in the songs. Along the way I’d be in other towns on the east coast of Australia and similar images of palm trees and whales would reveal themselves, as if by magic they seemed to be everywhere like in some freaky dream. I discovered they were all the work of artist Geoff Slater, who turned out to be awesome and generously allowed me to use the cover image. When I emailed him and explained how I’d been inspired by his work he said “Inspiration has natural power”. I thought “Wow, this guy walks the walk”, so I wrote “Magic Happens” as a tribute to the beachy, 70’s new-age vibes I was imagining him exuding. Now I’ve never met Geoff and I may be completely misrepresenting him in my thinking, but without a doubt he’s a big part of the Freaky Dreams story. 

The rest of the songs followed, all of them trying to meld seemingly disparate imagery or instrumentation into a single, if slightly blurry vision. The kind of feeling you might get when you stare into a mural too long I guess.

This second album from MINIBIKES, 'Freaky Dreams', kicks off where their debut left us, with pop hooks galore. To be released on June 12th 2020 on Australian label Cheersquad Records & Tapes on fluro green vinyl, black vinyl and digitally on all the usual platforms.

Wally “Meanie” Kempton took the plunge in 2018 and launched his brand-new record label Cheersquad Records & Tapes. Since then Cheersquad Records & Tapes has released new material from acts such as The Meanies, Immigrant Union, Chris Wilson, Jasmin Kaset, Money For Rope, Nick Craft, Minibikes, The Rinehearts and Los Chicos, along with limited edition vinyl releases of older material from artists including Snout, Sandpit and The Level Spirits.

Primarily creating the new label to release material he is passionate about, Wally says “I want to put out music that I really love, and think should be heard. I also want to make older, fabulous Aussie material available on 12” vinyl for the first time”. With a background in music, music and more music, Wally has worked at radio stations, venues, record companies, distributors, been a booking agent, artist manager, tour manager, a band member with Even and The Meanies, and now a record label founder with Cheersquad Records & Tapes.
